The number of Owls earning degrees in 1984, including graduate students (like me), was less than my high school graduating class in 1977.

Charlotte was founded in 1946 as two-year Charlotte College to serve soldiers returning from WWII. We went to four years in 1963, and became a part of the UNC System in 1965 which is considered the start of the modern era of the University. When the school was young it was small and therefore there were not many alums. Now we are over 27,000 students and cranking them out. By 2020 we should hit 40,000. In the last five years the 17 schools in the UNC System added an additional 6800 students. 48% of them at Charlotte.

2020 is 6 years away, we might hit 30,000 by then but not 40K.

I thought these were pretty cool.

Now if only the Alumni would say they are blazer fans instead of spewing out Roll Tide.

That would be something.

That does seem optimistic. I found quite a few references to 40k using The Google, but they were from 2007-2009 so I guess the recession really impacted that. I did find this item from 10 months ago where the University said about 35,000 by 2020. Either way we are growing like crazy and our number of alums is really expanding now.

Multiple times school "officials" have stated we would be at ~35,000 students by atleast 2020.

On a related note, Texas A&M wants to have 25,000 just in the engineering school. http://engineering.tamu.edu/25by25

Yeah, we haven't built a new classroom building on the main campus since Woodward opened and the funding from the 2001 bond referendum just ran out. There may be room for 30K but that long delayed new Science Building that's supposed to one day be where Black Lot is tells me we ain't getting to 35K in 6 years.

I have heard our alumni base is around 105K. Not sure if we have 150K. Either way, it's damn sad in that we only have 3200 in the Big Green Foundation.

Marshall Univ. generally defines "alumni" as anyone having attended the university (e.g., Billy Crystal is considered an alum despite being on campus for a semester or two); IMO, an alumnus is one that graduates from the institution. Bet that as it may, Marshall Univ. has about 105k living graduates. If the alumni association is circulating the 150k figure, it is probably a combination of former students (e.g., Billy Crystal) and non-alum members that have joined local clubs with spouses. When I lived in the Akron, OH area, the NE Ohio MU Alumni Assoc. had several non-alumnus members because a spouse (or even a parent or child) was an alumnus.

FWIW.

I believe the definition most schools use are attendees who left in good standing (whether through graduation or of their own volition). It's how you can claim alums at basketball schools that have their players leave after a couple of years, for example. However, if you got kicked out, etc., then you aren't considered an alum.

Thanks for posting those maps... no too shabby considering we started in 1969. US News & World Report has us in their top 15 Up & Coming National Universities list for a reason.

UTSA was founded in 1969, so we've only been around for 45 years now.

UTSA has 30k students, but under 110k Alumni. That 110k total is going change very fast.

Thanks, good to know. It makes sense. In fairness, it did say members, so it is very likely they included non-graduates.

Is there a number for total alumni anywhere? I know we started as a very small (one room) school, but we have been around since 1837.
