Capital One becomes the sponsor of the Orange Bowl
CFB Playoff @CFBPlayoff · 9m
The @OrangeBowl is now the #CapitalOneOrangeBowl!
And yet there's still the Capital One Bowl in Orlando. That's going to be confusing as hell.

I think they may drop the bowl in Orlando shortly. I don't think they want to sponsor 2 bowls.

I wouldn't mind that at all. I'd love for it to go back to being the Citrus Bowl.

RE: Capital One becomes the sponsor of the Orange Bowl
Just a fun fact, the Citrus bowl got it's name because it was sponsored by the Florida Citrus growers. It was one of the first bowls that started using sponsorship in it's name. I imagine BWW is bringing the Citrus part back trying not to confuse it with it's old Az. bowl.

Glad to see the Citrus Bowl name return. It's lost value being gone so long, but I love it none the less.
Now we need the Gator, Copper, and Independence Bowls back.

Ahhh....there it is.
So BWW drop the bowl in AZ and adds the Citrus.
With all the sponsorship changes, I think each bowl needs to follow the way the Rose bowl does it.
The Rose Bowl, presented by XXXX. As the sponsor changes, the bowl name doesn't.

That's the way it used ot be. But I think the sponsor's felt they weren't getting their money's worth because people would not say the corporate name when talking about it. Thus if you remove the original name, and call it only the corporate name (similar to stadiums) then you get the name value.
The Rose Bowl is simply big enough they can make that demand. The Orange Bowl too. Same with the Fiesta. But most of the non-BCS. non contract bowls, don't have that luxury.

I miss it being the Tangerine Bowl.

Good point. I don't think of the Citrus Bowl name even being a sponsor bowl, but I guess it really was the first (although somewhat differently).

There you go. Tangerine Bowl is old school! Unfortunately, Florida Citrus Sports owns the bowl game and they like Citrus Bowl.

I think with respect to the big bowls it's slightly more complicated than those bowls simply being big enough to keep their name.
E.g., I doubt that Cap One would want the Orange Bowl to become simply the "Cap One Bowl", and not just because of possible confusion with the existing bowl of that name in Orlando. Part of what Cap One is purchasing is associating their brand name with the established brand name known as the "Orange Bowl", a name known to all football fans, and that would be largely wiped out if "Orange Bowl" were dropped from the name. So even if Cap One had the power to decide the naming alone, I think they would prefer "Cap One Orange Bowl" to just "Cap One Bowl".
In contrast, with minor bowls like the former Cherry Bowl or somesuch, there is no real brand value in that "cherry" name, so it is best from a corporate visibility stance to have it called purely by the corporate name, the "Meineke Car Care Bowl" or whatever.

Like somebody said earlier, Citrus stemmed from the FLA Citrus sponsorship. The original name was Tangerine Bowl. So the bowl had a corporate name for many years before Cap One. Anyway, I prefer Citrus over Cap One any day.

I'm not sure. Capital One preferred Capital One Bowl to Capital One Citrus Bowl. Meanwhile, Chick-fil-A prefered the Chick-fil-A Bowl to Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Over the short run, I think you are right, but over the long run, I think they'd rather have the whole name as people adapt to it. The bowls are reluctant to do that though as they lose of brand power (example: Loosing Capital One is bigger for Florida Citrus Sports since Citrus Bowl is now more than a decade gone and thus has lost some of its former cache). Therefore the bowls only agree if the contract is big enough or if the brand is limited enough anyway.
The CFP fortunately wants traditional names and thus Orange Bowl and Peach Bowl aren't going anywhere.
Edit: The one other thing with the Citrus Bowl is the stadium is actually named the Citrus Bowl still.

The other fun fact, the Blockbuster bowl in Miami that over to the Carquest moved to Orlando in the early 2000's and was renamed to Tangerine Bowl prior to becoming the Russell Athletic Champions bowl. I do wish bowls would pick a name and have it be Sponsor Bowl Name. I do like how Duck Commander kept the Independence bowl name.

That's because those were minor bowls, and there was little brand value in the names "Citrus" or "Peach".
In contrast, the Orange Bowl - like the Sugar, Cotton, and Rose - is an iconic football name. It is something everyone in football is well aware of and has been decades. There is a LOT of brand value in that name, and any smart corporate marketing officer would not want to wipe that out.
The idea, therefore, is to get your name paired with that iconic name, not eliminate it. That would eliminate a lot of the value of sponsoring that bowl.
