Running game isn't what you need to beat Rice. You need a quarterback who can hit wide open receivers 30+ yards downfield. That's pretty much it

This. Plus an offensive line to protect that quarterback until he finds the open receiver.

I think just about everyone has enough of a line and enough of a quarterback to throw downfield effectively against Rice. IMHO, you need the receivers that can catch the ball downfield, and that seems to be a tougher get than either of the other two at the college level.

If Rice can stop USM for about 5-6 series without scoring, I think Rice will win. IMHO, the more telling thing about the ODU game is 11 possessions, six touchdowns and the game ending field goal. Hitting deep receivers was important for ODU, but scoring on 7/11 possessions is what undid Rice (notice 8 of those possessions started after a kickoff). Rice will end about 2-3 drives on its own, even if the opposing defense played fainting goat defense. They may be stopped a couple of times by good defense. The game hinges on ending the other team's possessions without yielding points, and deep passes to receivers that can't catch over their shoulder on the run is one way to stop drives.

I'm optimistic.

I think the guys got some confidence after the App State game.. I'm hoping they come out and fight tooth and nail Saturday for the home crowd and get another W.

Actually, I am Optimistic. You are Dunn.

I expect both teams will play hard and the better team will win.

We can't stop the run. We've given up over 190 yards on the ground every game this season and pretty sure last season as well. We don't have linebackers and don't tackle well.

Rice runs the ball really well.

That will be the biggest challenge.

I've seen all 4 USM games this year along with bits and pieces of Rice's 3 games and in my opinion I see Rice winning this one 35-24

My question I have for the Rice fans.. I know when USM went 0pher in 2012, we were looking for ways to lose.. Is that the case or is Rice just losing close games to good teams?

We lost to 2 top 10 teams and we were overmatched. We moved the ball pretty well on both (outgained A&M). It's a bit of an overreaction to take too much away from either of those games...not a team in c-usa would have won either of those.

As for our other loss vs. ODU, they're a good team offensively and they were a bad matchup for us. As mentioned, our weakness is our pass defense and they have a good qb. We were also missing our best pass rusher and some other important players (our qb missed some time during the game as well). We lost by a last second field goal, but it wasn't a game where I would say we were looking for a way to lose...they just beat us.

Nevertheless, I'm pretty happy with what I see from our offense and we won't go 0fer.

Yeah, we really can't afford any of that.

Good summary. I think Rice will come to Hattiesburg with something to prove.

I'm going to add to that excellent breakdown by pointing out that Rice has turned it over only one time in three games.

If anybody here remembers the 2007 Rice USM game, then that's exhibit A on how an overmatched team can get the best of a 'better' team. But Rice has protected the ball well (and moved it well) on offense all season.

It's CUSA so remember, first team to 40 points wins! (unless you're WKU, sorry guys)
