RE: New MAC TV Deal
"Also, look around. The number of bidders is dwindling. Fox didn’t even bid on Conference USA football. Fox 1 has been a marginal success. Fox 2 is a disaster. ESPN is looking for every way to contain costs. The network gravy train is over, folks."

According to this, Fox didn't even bid on CUSA and CBS Sports Network seemed to dump CUSA for MAC games this year.
Which leaves ASN as the primary rights holder. CUSA may drop behind the Sun Belt in TV payouts.
I feel much better about the MAC TV contract. Oh, Marshall....

That article is suggesting that Marshall might benefit from the potential Big 12 expansion by creating openings in the AAC. Of course, will the AAC be worth it if they lose their better teams. Anything is better than CUSA though.

It's a Charleston, W.Va., newspaper. I wouldn't put a lot of weight on that. Seems more speculative than anything.

Has anyone considered that the AAC no longer needs 12 teams? Nobody needs 12 teams?
Lets assume the worst case scenario for the AAC, lets assume that the B12 comes in and takes two schools. What's to say the AAC needs to run out and find two teams quickly? They could still have a conference championship game.
So the calculus is what it has always been. Do you bring more value than you will take from others.

RE: New MAC TV Deal
More wishing than anything on Marshall's part. If the B12 expands, they do not take more than 2 AAC programs. Their first priority will be BYU football only and SD State football only. With the CHargers leaving San Diego, that leaves a top 20 market with only 1 major pro sports franchise. SD ST is the largest university in the MWC and won the conference football title last year. Plus they play in a 70K seat stadium.
Then they take advantage of the other gift the NFL is offering and that is St Lous, with the Rams leaving, the only competition St Louis BIllikens hoops will have is Blues Hockey. They play in a 70M arean that seats nearly 11K in downtown St Louis almost walking distance from Busch Stadium. Would also get the big 12 back into Missouri and adding Wichita State & St Louis for hoops and Olympic Sports would make travel economical as well.
Wichita has been the most successful hoops program in the MVC and would be a good replacement for Kansas who they beat in the Tournament last year.
BYU & SD State are the best replacements for when TX, OK & KU leave. Add one of the FLorida AAC teams and the big 12 is back to 12 members with 2 football only and 2 hoops & olympic sports only plus one of the AAC Florida programs.
Makes the Big 12 the only power conference with football programs in California, Texas and Florida plus adds solid hoops programs in Wichita & St Louis to replace OU & KU. UCF hasn't the name or tradition of Texas but they have a comparably sized student body and have spent millions in recent years to upgrade their facilities.
B12 could do alot worse

The Big 12 isn't taking SLU and Wichita, that's crazy talk. If they're going to add anyone, it'll be two teams that bridge the geographical gap between everyone and WVU, have large markets, and good football and basketball programs. UC and Memphis fit both of those.

Not sure they would execute the clause, but ESPN has the right to reduce or terminate it's contract with the AAC. Of course did not think the MAC would execute the clause to out UMass. So take that with a grain of salt.
Quote:ESPN matched an offer made by NBC Sports Network and was awarded the Big East's media rights. Because ESPN is the primary rights holder, it was able to retain the conference's media rights simply by matching the league's best offer.
The seven-year deal included a stipulation that it could be terminated if the league lost two more schools, sources said. ESPN could only match NBC Sports Network's deal and not change the language of the contract, sources said.
NBC Sports Network's contract divided the league into Group A (Connecticut, Cincinnati, Houston and Temple) and Group B (the remaining members), sources said.
The media rights deal can be terminated if either two Group A schools leave or one Group A and one Group B school leave. If two Group B schools leave, the contract will be renegotiated, sources said.

Is Memphis any good in basketball anymore? I haven't heard or seen anything on their basketball since Derrick Rose and Calipari fiasco. Seems like their program dropped off heavily. Their football was only good the last two seasons and has otherwise been terrible. Very good chance that program takes a big dive too after losing their stud QB to NFL.
