If it was a Star of David or another religious symbol other than a cross, the whole Midwest would implode and there would be riots in the streets to have it removed. Freedom of speech works both ways but rarely does.

I disagree. If a Jewish player passed and the team wanted to honor him that way, I believe it would be a non issue.

What about Muslim? Atheist? Buddhist? Rasta? Hindu? Sihk? Satanist? Pagan?

Would all be allowed? If not, then no cross.

i believe it should be up to the team to find the appropriate symbol to honor a passed player if a helmet sticker is the desired method of rememberance. it doesnt necessiarly have to be religious either. but if it is, we should trust the coaches and the team to properly represent the player and the school.

Let's get something straight right here and now about satanism: Only moody little emo high school kids legitimately say they worship satan. The Church of Satan's REAL goal is to prove the point you're making UConnwhaler. It's not that they really want a statue outside of that Oklahoma courthouse for example, it's that they don't want the Ten Commandments because of the Separation of Church and State. Their goal is to mock the uber-Christianity that is pervasive in our country that goes unchecked and overlooked a lot of times. Like you said, if you allow one you have to allow them all. What symbol would attract the most attention and would illicit the same anger from Christians that push their point of view that a person like me feels seeing the Ten Commandments in a courthouse? Satan.

I'm an atheist that supports the goals and intent of the Church of Satan. Politics makes for strange bedfellows....

The thing that people forget in this is respect of cultures different than yours and that the United States has many different prominent cultures within its borders, depending on where you live. If I were to go to a strong Muslim community in the USA, I would respect the fact that I am a Christian in an Islamic culture and would try not to go out of my way to be offensive to their culture. In Dearborn, MI there was/is a strong Islamic culture that the local high school respected by working their practices around Ramadon. Such action was necessary to respect the local culture. In Wilmington, NC there is not the same culture and therefore no reason to try and follow the same example set forth by Dearborn.

In the same token I imagine Jonesboro, AK has a strong Christian culture that the team chose to dive into when coming up with these decals. Instead of being respected for their choice in honoring their teamates through a prominant local cultural symbol like the cross, they were not respected and forced to remove it until it gained mainstream publicitiy and lawsuit threats started flying. We as a society have a problem respecting things we do not agree with; we try to shut them down which is the complete opposite of our constitution.
