Marshall should be 1.
I have ECU at 2. Northern Illinois at 3. BYU at 4, and Cincy at 5.
Was very tempted to put LaTech at 5, since Cincy has only played the one game.

BYU beat both Texas, and UCONN on the road worse than Marshall beat Miami OH. Neither are exactly world beaters, but definitely better than Miami OH

Yeah, and they struggled with Houston. Jury is still out. I think ECU, Marshall, and NI would take them.

I think we will be able to tell for sure in a couple of weeks when we can see where UH really is.

Without a doubt the three at the top have separated themselves from everyone else. ECU's victory over VA Tech after Tech's win over Ohio State was definitely the catalyst for the nudge to put them in the #1 slot. However, with only three games played a lot can happen. But, I must say the timing was perfect for ECU and was a very impressive win.

Good luck this week against UNC, IMO a win at home following last week’s results should solidify ECU at the top of the poll. Everyone else will be chasing the Pirates including BYU.

I think Ga. Southern is one of the best G5 squads, and I think Hawaii will be in the G5 Top 25 by the end of the season.

Most G5s would beat State, but GaSU gave it away. I didn't watch the GaTech game, but it seems like both teams played sloppy, so I'm really not sure. I think there top 25 fringe. No clue on Hawaii

I think Ga. Southern is one of the best G5 squads, and I think Hawaii will be in the G5 Top 25 by the end of the season.

GA Southern was one of the movers and shakers in week 3. They soared up nine places "Moving up the charts like a bullet" and are nipping at the heels of the others in that 25, 24 and 23 tier group of the top 25. If they lose this week at Southern Miss, it will be a big hit for the SBC and will affect the overall perception of the conference. If they win, that may ignite a fuse for other voters to give them the reps they need to slip in to the top 25.

There is a lot of football to be played and I'm sure the surprises will continue to heighten everyones interest and excitement as the season moves forward.

Here are the 5 teams that had the largest leaps up in the poll this week.

1) Utah up 11 spots
2) Memphis up 10 spots
3) Louisiana Tech up 9 spots
4) UTEP up 9 spots
5) Georgia Southern up 9 spots

Although the website has clearly used independents except for ND from day one in the polls

Well that's an obvious flaw. Either count all independents or don't count them at all.

Furthermore, if you don't include BYU then ECU is the #1 G5 program hands down.

RE: Week 3 G5 Top 25 National Football Poll 2014 RESULTS (Sept 18)
I hope that ECU plays a CUSA team in their bowl game, preferably Marshall. The only way to shrink a ECU fans head is for them to be beat by an "inferior" conference team. I like the ECU football team but their fans act like ECU is superior to every other team. They remind me of ND Fighting Irish fans which are the biggest Aholes on the planet.

We had to listen to the same **** last year until ECU lost to Tulane and then curb stomped by Marshall. I can't wait for the excuses when they lose to Houston or another so called mid level AAK school.

ECU beating a way over ranked VT team looks good but VT will go 7-5 or 6-6 this year so stop acting like you beat Alabama. Please stop with all the ECU is no.1. We heard it last year and the year before that until they lose to a inferior team.

Who was the only G5 team to beat Alabama in the same year they won the S$C?

Wow…So you kinda dislike the Pirates??? lol Looking through this thread it seems to me that people other than ECU fans are talking about ECU being #1. The posts I see here from ECU fans seem pretty calm and even one said BYU should be #1. At this point if BYU is included I think they should be #1. From that point I think there are 3 or 4 teams that could make an argument at #2.

I am withholding judgement on ECU at this point…If ECU can get past UNC this week then I think we have a case for being #1 mainly because of our schedule and results to date. But like you said there is still a lot of football left to be played.

Don't take these things so serious, pretty much all polls are useless this time year….Not enough games played yet to understand what you are actually seeing each weekend. You could be right about Va Tech…Time will tell, but no matter what that is still a quality win on the road.

It's all still on track for the 2-loss AAC champion versus undefeated Marshall debate we have argued for 6 months. Northern Illinois or Boise State could crash that party, though.

As for Marshall, call me when they play a team with a pulse. I would put them in around # 5 to 8.

I doubt it…I do not see Marshall going undefeated…CUSA is up this year and there are several teams that will give Marshall a run for their money. It will be fun to see how it all plays out. Creates a lot of interest in other conference games and it will make watching some of these mid-week games later in the season even more interesting.

Well that's an obvious flaw. Either count all independents or don't count them at all.

Furthermore, if you don't include BYU then ECU is the #1 G5 program hands down.

Early on when the poll was being discussed and formulated, we were faced with this issue: How to handle the four independents? Do we just ignore them or dissect the problem to see if any of the independents potentially fit the profile of other G5 schools.

As we looked for a solution to the independent classification issue it was actually a no brainer. In regards to Notre Dame, it was obvious that ND clearly fit the profile of a Power five program. Again their athletic budget and the future alignment with the ACC made it obvious. The other three including BYU fit the typical profile when compared to other G5 programs. Again it was obvious Navy, who will be joining the AAC, clearly aligns with other G5 teams. In regards to Army, again the facts show they are a perfect fit to be included in the mix of other G5 schools. BYU was not as clear cut as the others. However, once we started looking closer at the comparisons, the logical solution was to include them. Our decision was reinforced during the summer when the P5 commissioners from the Power five conferences met and decide BYU would not be classified as a P5 program for the era of the “National Championship Playoff System”.

In reality the Cartel alliance was so preoccupied with the discussing of SOS for the future National Championship Game and how they could design the selection criteria to eliminate G5 schools from the conversation, BYU just became road kill. So, that made our decision even more apparent, and we decided to include them for consideration as a G5 team in the Top 25 Poll.

Hope this answers the question: Why is BYU included in our weekly poll. The landscape of college athletics will continue to be fluid and we may have to reassess this issue in the future.

Thanks for your comments, I hope this gives a little insight into why they are included at this time.

I understand the rationale but if you ask those four independents schools what do they consider their classification to be, I bet each one would tell you they are independent; not G-5 or P-5.

I don't think any of the independents want to be classified in the Group of Five regardless of what G-5 posters think (I realize Navy will become a G-5 program next season I believe). I don't think we should hold Notre Dame to a different standard than the other three programs even if it is an obvious difference.

Just my opinion; keep up the good work!
