Our former BB coach: Is this allowed by NCAA?
X is looking to have his own private 2 day combine for the NBA. Has the NCAA bent over to allow this? 01-wingedeagle

Hardly obsessed. If allowed it gives UK a definite recruiting advantage. Did you even read the article?

Isn't the point of recruiting to offer a recruit something that another school can't?

Obsession.

It's only a recruiting advantage over teams without a NBA franchise in their home town.

NCAA doesn't care. Correct me if I'm wrong, but scouts are allowed to attend practices. All Calipari did is set aside two days specifically for scouts to come in, and then he will close practices for a while. I hate him, but he's a brilliant salesman.

Agreed. Smart idea, but will only emphasize the uselessness of the "one and done" rule.

Instead of closing practice therefore banning scouts ... he is having a KY-U 'combine' ..this is nothing but renaming something any school could do...

The reason people like to talk about him is because of his outstanding record at Memphis - especially his last five years. He maybe missed by many posters and hence the desire to mention him five years after he left us for the Wildcats.

Pastner is a nice guy, but he has not matched Cal yet in NCAA Tourney advancement.

I third this, no fan of Calipari currently, but this is a PR coup and very smart. Give the devil his due...

It is time to move on. I moved on once the 1st KU recruiting class moved on. He had every right, and should have taken the job when offered. Cal is a great 'out of the box' guy. This is a good idea and recruiting tool but so is the alumni game that he does. It is essentially a 2nd midnight madness for recruits. He is good and that is the bottom line.

The love/hate for Calipari by this board is facinating.

The "advantage" seems a bit overblown to me.

I would like us to have something similar, but I'm not fooling myself into thinking its a difference maker for big recruits.

No one is going to choose UK over things like this, they choose it because Cal is there.

I don't think Cal is going to be there much longer now anyway. Cleveland will come calling withing 1-2 years max and I bet he takes it this time.

Its pretty much the same nationwide.

Lot of hate out there for Cal everywhere. He's kind of like the cowboys, almost no one is neutral on him.

I'd rather have Pastner than have 2 professional teams in town. Let's face facts, that one and done thing he has going is as close to NBA as you'll get without BEING in the NBA.

It works. Kentucky fans are happy and my guess is most Memphis fans would also be overjoyed with the Wildcats' level of success regardless of how it was achieved within the rules.

Cal at UK is a different animal. He has more $$$ and resources at his disposal, established national recruiting connections, elite conference affiliation, and favorable officiating compared to his time here. If he had tried to set up an NBA farm team in Memphis like he has at UK, the NCAA would have come down on us with the fire of 1,000 suns.
