Winston strikes again
Just saw this
http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...ase-public

Suspended for 1st half of game on Saturday with Clemson. Remarkable that FSU doesn't suspend him for the entire game- but we know why- they have to cover their ass- they can't lose this game.

Winston....Again.
First off, I am a FSU follower. That said, maybe it is finally time to send this kid back to Div II for common sense rehab. He apparently has none right now. Some kids do not appreciate a free college education...01-lauramac2

Winston embodies that old cliche about a talented athlete who "has a million-dollar body and a ten-cent head".

When people talk about the "good old days," this is what they're referring to. Now if you're remotely semi-famous you can't even make a joke to your friends without it ending up all over the internet and the PC crowd taking away your livlihood.

No one is taking away Winston's livelihood. They didn't suspend him "without pay". 03-lmfao

If this was still the "good old days," either his momma are Daddy or both would have been on Campus ASAP with belt in hand to blister his backside.

Really Bearcat? Do you think what is being alleged in this situation is anything analogous "making a joke to your friends"?? IMO, the reality is is that if an "ordinary student" did what Winston is alleged to have done in this situation, the punishment would likely be far more severe.

There is a phrase from the "good old days" that I think applies here: "to whom much is given...much is expected".

IMO, part of the reason why these athletes get into trouble is because, all too often, they are brought up in a climate where they do NOT face consequences for bad behavior. This does nobody any good, not the least the athletes themselves.

IMO, this has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with common decency.

this idiot did not make a joke to friends......he stood on a table in a very public place and shouted vulgarities about basically using a female as a sex object......this of course shortly after he had been accused of rape and while he is under investigation by the university over the code of conduct related to that allegation and not long after he was caught stealing

no one is denying him the right to be a fool or an ass they are just attempting to put the smallest amount of consequences for doing so in a very public way upon him......clearly it is not working or getting through to him though which is why he is most likely headed to prison and or financial ruin in the longer term if not the short term

He "jumped up on the table and yelled an obscene sexual phrase." If that resulted in suspension for everyone, I think half my high school football team, and several of the coaches, would have been suspended at one point or another. And no, they don't hold normal students to this standard.

I agree that it's childish, stupid, and in poor taste. But is FSU now saying that they're going to punish every athlete who acts childish on campus? It's asking a lot of a 20 year old to never say something childish or stupid; that's too high of a standard to reasonably hold them to.

So, according to you, "half of your high school football team and several of the coaches" did the equivalent of jumping up on table, in a crowded lunchroom or student union, and yelled vulgar obscenities? Really? I don't think so! IMO, what was alleged to have occurred here was more than "childish and stupid". It was vulgar, obscene and incredibly demeaning to women. Something that demands consequences. IMO, the fact that you obviously cannot see this point is indicative as to why this has become such a problem in athletics as well as in the broader society.

Look, I am not suggesting to you that there are not cases where political correctness gets the better of common sense and fairness. That too happens all to frequently, IMO. This situation, however, is not one of those cases, IMO.

It is necessary when he is one of the faces and a representative of the university. A non-student athlete-how do you punish-but a full scholarship athlete is held to higher standards. It is a privelage and not a right to be in his position.

What do you think your office of employment would do if yelled in the cafeteria or hallway a sexual obscene gesture. I think HR would be all over your back. If the university did nothing-all hell would break loose against them, especially right now with Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson. You can't put a front that football players get do do whatever the hell they want.

Also, remember that this isn't a case of Winston mumbling that remark while sitting with a couple of friends. He jumped on a table and yelled it and made sure everyone there could hear him.

So, I think it would be like this:

Ordinary, average college student jumps on table in campus cafeteria and yells that: If it's a first offense (and assuming the school is smart enough to have a written conduct policy), then the student gets a warning and are told they won't be allowed in campus cafeterias any more if there is a second violation.

Employee at a company jumps on table in company cafeteria and yells that: If it's a first offense, employee gets a written warning that goes in their personnel file, and are told that they will be terminated if there is a second violation.

The key in both of those scenarios is "If it's a first offense". This is not the first time Winston has run afoul of what the coaches presumably expect of their players.

When I was 20 years old I was married with a young son and already in an Air Force career. I cannot stomach the " these are just kids" crap. He is just an idiot. Sex problems, big mouth problems, and stealing crab leg problems. You cannot teach common sense. You are born with or without it. Florida State's reputation is on trial here now.

Who cares about common decency anymore?

I find it interesting that FSU suspends him for political incorrectness (telling a bad taste joke so loudly that everyone hears it), yet didn't seem to care he was accused of rape or was guilty of shoplifting.

I wonder if they would have let it go if Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson weren't drawing attention to badly behaving football players.

No, because the real issue is that Winston lacks situational awareness. A couple of minor criminal offense times a rape allegation equals that one should be on the straight and narrow. But Winston doesn't see that or he simply does care. He shouldn't be in a public place as the public face of the school shouting obscenities about women.
