He's also hit or is about to hit the board's mandatory retirement age.

Unless they raise it again.

Sure, raise it again... He doesn't look a day over 60...

Reminds me of the company I work for. Full retirement w/accompanying pension can be had by some but the same question comes up: "Retire from what?". They've worked so long with so much vacation and sick leave banked and with staff that does all the work such that they hardly seem to come to work - or work when they do come... If you don't do anything is "retirement" even a valid term?

That may be what I was thinking of & it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they did

Get in your legislator's ear and raise hell. Education in this state is bad enough without allowing this to happen. Hell, that's the reason we have two funds in the first place, to keep them from pissing away the school money.

The so and so's need to either cut spending or raise taxes to cover the spending... and it's a Republican lege, so you know they'd rather strangle than raise a dime's worth of taxes, no matter how big the deficit is.

The last time I voted for them to do that was...well the last time I voted for them to do that & it was decades ago. Never again

I wasn't pleased when the Republicans decided to raid the Education Fund (last year, I believe) to handle the general fund shortcomings.

BNB has derailed another thread. Needs to go to the political board.

Many state residents have never known how schools operated prior to the SETF in the mid1930s. Before Gov Bibb Graves got the SETF set up, many state districts operated only 6 months per year - and that was only for white students. Most of the others got 3 months of school per year, if that. After a decade of the SETF funding (the 1950s), most districts were able to operate a 9 month year of 175 days. Alabama has only added 5 days to the public school year since then while the state's legislature passed a recent law guaranteeing 185 SCHOOL-FREE days each year.

As post secondary school lobbyists in Montgomery have brought up occasionally to get more of the SETF money, the Constitution of 1901 does not recognize K-12 public education as a "necessary function" of state government so it should get only "left over" money each year. Until the SETF was given earmarked funding (1% state income tax and 1% state sales tax) in the 1930s, public K-12 schools only received that left over money. In 1940, only 8% of those who went to a high school got a diploma. Do we want to risk going back to that?

So hopefully we only have to put up with him for one more year!

But then good ole Finis is waiting in the wings to be the ring leader.

Yeah, rules don't much apply to him. Not if he does not want them to.
