Interesting comparison
Interesting opinion piece from fbschedules.com. Basically comparing Ohio State and ECU and asking why Ohio State is ranked and ECU is not. Nothing that we haven't all seen and debated amongst ourselves...

http://www.fbschedules.com/2014/09/east-...y-contest/
Have you ever compared Top 25 voters with junior high school girls?
Though the two are about as similar as the weather in Florida versus that in Minnesota, they do share one common bond: They both value popularity at the polls.
Yes, where one group tends to vote the popular kids into student council roles and head cheerleader positions, the other ranks big-name programs ahead of smaller schools which are actually playing at a higher level.
While in either case it doesn’t happen all the time, it happens frequently enough to warrant at least a pause for reflection.

My favorite line from the article:
The question isn’t so much, “Should East Carolina be ranked?” but instead, “Should Ohio State be ranked?”

If it wasn't for their favorable preseason ranking they would not be ranked. If we started where they started they would be ranked. Should Ohio state be ranked? Probably not. Should ECU be ranked? Let's see after this weekend

This is why a public writers poll and a poll of coaches--most of whom have probably not even seen ECU play---might arrive a completely different top 25 than a well informed very studied selection committee. An ECU type team might very well be much more appreciated by a committee.

Most polls are meaningless, especially preseason. These polls might look at historical data from the year before, recruiting classes, quality coaching, returning starters, etc. etc. But one thing they don't factor is "heart and desire" or the proverbial "chip on the shoulder" mentality.

If we beat UNC this week we will be ranked. This is traditionally where we stub our toe but hoping we can not do that this season.

That would also assume the selection committee is anymore observant and competent than the writers and coaches, and that's not yet known. I have little reason to trust them at all.

It's really not news, unfortunately this is the world we live in. ECU should be ranked but they will face an uphill battle because of perceptions and popularity. Louisville was ranked above UCF in the writers and coaches poll for weeks last year despite beating them. They never really pay attention to games just popularity.

I'm not even convinced beating UNC guarantees we'll get ranked. It would probably be pretty close.

We would. They're top 25 or on the cusp. We'd be 23-25th.

Just keep winning, at some point they can not ignore that factor. In some respects I kind of like the fact we are struggling for respect with some of the media. Keep the kids focused and put that chip on the shoulder. Historically ECU has not delivered when given an opportunity like Saturday..I just hope the kids can get it done Saturday against the Heels.
