ACC Orange Bowl Opponent
If Michigan St is number 5 and the champion of the Big 10, would they go to the Orange Bowl since the Rose Bowl is a playoff bowl this year?

P5 Champions who don't make the playoffs the years their contract bowl is a playoff site get automatic bids to access bowls (this is to make the access bowls more attractive to tv), so the Orange Bowl couldn't select Michigan State under those circumstances.
Michigan State would play in the Fiesta, Cotton or Peach Bowl, and the Orange Bowl would pit the highest ranked non-playoff ACC team against the highest ranked team from the Big Ten, SEC and Notre Dame that: 1) is not playing in the Sugar or Rose Bowls (whether they are playoffs or not); 2) is not their conference champion; and 3) would not create a rematch.

4) and fits within the parameters of allowing ND to appear up to 2 times in 12 years and allow an SEC and B10 to appear at least 3 times in 12 years.

Notre Dame will play exactly two Orange Bowl contract games in the next 12 years. The real "guiding principle" behind this arrangement demands it.

Correct, and the OB will want them as soon as they can get them - perhaps this year. If FSU runs the table and beats ND then I can see ND against Duke, Miami, VT or Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

I posed this question in regard to the very real possibility of a Clemson / S. Carolina rematch in the Orange Bowl, and I was told that absolutely they have the option to skip a team if it's a rematch. Not sure if it has to be a rematch from the same season or not (there was some indication that other ACC bowls can skip a team if it's a rematch of the previous bowl season; not sure if that applies to the Orange or not).

My understanding is that the Orange Bowl is prohibited from taking the SEC or B1G conference champion. It has to be a runner up.
