Big losses because these two have been our third down playmakers. We lost two starting safeties by game three last year also and that was a season long disaster because we had true freshmen and a rb behind them. Hopefully these guys recover well and quickly and the next men up are able to also make plays.

What is the red shirt limit these days? How far into the season can they play and still get a medical?

Give Clark a chance to see how he deals with and adjust to the situation. I know the last two coaches haven't filled us with hope in bad situations, but Clark hasn't gotten where he has by not being prepared or making desperate moves. We'll see how the defense is affected after the FIU game.

Crenshaw had to work with what Clark gave him, which wasn't much. No problem with the article.

A little surprised that any information was given openly.

I think the biggest problem with the article is his lack of detail. Go into detail on what they do now at safety. And be accurate when you do that. Desman Carter is listed behind Jay Davis not Lamarcus Farmer. Go into detail on what you lose when you lose Kalen Jackson and Bobby Baker. He didn't even know for sure that Jackson was hurt (Clark had to tell him) and Jackson was on the sideline on crutches Saturday. Paying attention to what is happening is one of the largest shortcomings of the al.com coverage right now.

I don't know the exact rule but I believe you have to get a waiver from the NCAA to get a medical redshirt. I would think someone only playing 3 games into the season and missing the rest of the season would qualify but the NCAA doesn't always make sense to me.

Both should be eligible. To qualify for a medical redshirt the player has to have appeared in less than 30% of the teams total regular season games, non after the midway point.
So basically, any football player that played in up to the first 3 games and gets hurt can be redshirted.

That's a pretty specific timeline based on very limited info

Especially given Staples not even being in pads this past weekend, and we haven't heard anything about him that I'm aware of. Also, Madrecus was awfully quiet after that big play he had, and no one has said anything about him publicly either.

Humphrey was out of his pads at the end of the game, as well.

I thought he had a boot on that game, like N. Jackson being in shorts handing Vinson gatorade but showing up as a game participant.

One would think that participant would be those who got in for at least 1 play, but I'm not sure.

He isn't showing up on the participation list for the Moo U or A&M games.

Is the "medical redshirt" settled in the season the injury occurred or is it requested at the end point of his regular eligibility - like asking for a 6th season as we have seen in the past? In the past, we have seen possible 6th season perhaps being awarded, but the player doesn't want to stay around after his degree is granted (unless a real possibility of going pro is part of the equation).

I could be wrong but I don't think it's decided until after the season.
