ESPN Commentator: We Need To Reprogram How We Raise Men
Quote:On ESPN’s “SportsCenter” earlier this week, espnW columnist Kate Fagan argued that the big picture in the controversy surrounding former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s domestic violence allegations. According Fagan, the problem needs to be tackled at the so-called grassroots level when men are in their formative years. “Well, I think right now we're talking so much about firing Goodell or punishments. You know, should it be a three game, a two game, a six game, a full year ban? But I think that's a little reactive and not proactive. Domestic violence is something that happens in anger, in the moment and it’s very unlikely that perpetrators are worried about whether it will be a two, a six, a 12-game suspension. This is behavior that is happening at the grassroots level that is born through years of our culture like raising like men to want to not be like women and using language like ‘sissy’ and ‘you throw like a girl’ that demean women. These are all contributing factors. And I think if we want to hold the NFL’s feet to the fire over this issue, we shouldn't be looking at the number of game suspensions because I don't think that will change the problem. I think it should mean getting them to throw the kitchen sink at domestic violence. To invest millions of dollars in grassroots organizations, in going into middle schools and high schools and colleges and talking to young men about dealing with anger, about how they treat women. I think that’s where you're going to see change. I think that right now all of this reactive behavior is not going to change it, as much as going in and going into the school system and the younger spaces and really reprogramming how we raise men.”

She's right. And she needs to get out of the way, because she is the problem.

More men need to be involved in raising boys.

We could start by banning rap music and violent video games.

Rap music started in the 80s. Violent video games started in the 90s. Has domestic violence been on the rise since then? I honestly don't know.

RE: ESPN Commentator: We Need To Reprogram How We Raise Men
We also need to recognize the role that women play in domestic violence too. People ignore that Rice's wife came at him first...he just responded with force that exceeded what was required to defend himself. TODAY, among citizens, it is not just men that need the lesson...women also need to understand that they should keep their hands to themselves as well.

As to that other nonsense about throwing like girls and sissies, men ARE NOT women. Her argument is contradictory. She says that that men should not believe they are different than women and then goes on to talk about how men should treat women differently. Men and women are different and both should keep their hands to themselves.

Yeah, because violent video game situations just happen in real life. Although:

IMO, rap music and violent video games are not the cause of this. I have listened and played both as a young child and do not feel like I want to assault people. IMO, our focus on male initiated domestic violence over the years has given women the idea (which has proven to be correct) that they can use violence and men are helpless to respond without exposing themselves to the possibility of jail time. We also, as a culture, like realty situations where people aggressively attack other people. Real people fighting is like the trainwreck everyone likes to watch and maybe even upload to youtube. We have always had instances of simulated violence without the violent society. However, as our morals have degraded, so has our respect for life and our ability to understand the difference between right and wrong.

Coming from an ESPN commentator, this probably means raise them more like women.

It's funny how dumb jock commentators on sports programming think all men are as ghetto and uneducated as the men drafted by the NFL.

Or instead of being a little biitch and crying about it, she can back off they can be brought up and taught, BY THEIR FATHER, to respect women and never lay a hand on them no matter how mad they get.

Thank you for putting it this way. You articulated what I was trying to say... Their reprogramming and engineering of our families is making this problem worse not better.

RE: ESPN Commentator: We Need To Reprogram How We Raise Men
This can all be laid at the feet of Father's in this country.

Some have the fun and leave the child to be raised by women
Some don't pay attention, too busy watching sports or forgetting their workdays to care how their kids are raised
Some let their wives run everything in the family when they should be the leaders of the family
Some have given up their rightful roles in families because of societal calls for so-called "equality of the sexes"
Some do what's right and their kids turn out to be generally great people, but they're not the majority anymore

Men have given up to live the "easy life" and now all of societies problems can rightfully be laid at our feet. We need to stand up and LEAD again, its what we were born to do.

And don't think this is just an issue with boys, I've known plenty of girls who's Fathers fit the above list and they range from single mothers who always pick the wrong man to pole dancers and beyond.

Has this chick watched TV and seen how men are always the sap while women come across as the intelligent one? Has this babe ever counted the number of men who get custody of their kids in a child dispute? Does this woman know that all it takes is a phone call to the cops by a woman and the man is arrested even if he never did anything? How many women pay alimory?

If throwing "like a girl" is demeaning, then it's because SHE thinks girls can't throw. How many women are playing in the NFL? None. And that's because women are weaker and don't perform as well in sports as men do. Screw her.

Domestic violence is a two way street and in the end the man usually loses one way or another.
