Trust me Marshall fans know what that's like. We didn't have any friends in the SoCon or the MAC. The MAC always thought we came in and took their bowl spot. We was never thought of as one of them.

In a few recruiting classes/years away, we'll be pounding the stuffing out of each other just like we did with VCU and GMU. .... and I'll be happy again!

WIN LOSE or DRAW if you are in Huntington trust me you will have people welcome you to the city, offer you food and drink at a tailgate and wish you a safe trip home when the game is over. Our cheerleaders usually go up in the stands and thank ppl for coming. Always have and always will.

Im not saying we don't have the occasional rude fan. But for the most part our guests are welcomed and thanked for coming.

We have some on this board and travel to board to board that talk smack, pay no attention to the men behind the curtain.

More than a few have had a laugh. But I took up for ODU in the Marshall thread that everyone and their grandmother ignored, the truth is my words probably cut to deep to respond.

Truth is most in Harrisburg VA wish they were in your shoes.

I noticed that was well. In fact it was usually just the opposite, which was very strange in that, it would most always benefit your program in one way or another for a conference mate to win an OOC or a playoff game. 07-coffee3

This is one of my fav responses to them about their playing and new coach...

Truth is that Marshall gave us the beatdown in our inaugural CUSA season that JMU predicted they would give us in our inaugural CAA season. Didn't quite work out the way they thought.

Not only do they have the same record in football that we have while playing in a watered down CAA, they just had the only real basketball player on their team get suspended indefinitely. Almost feel sorry for them...

RE: Taking our lumps
Lest any of you are having second thoughts about moving to CUSA, do you remember this?
I posted it after the 2012 season. ODU, along with our brethren from real GSU, was part of the most watched FCS game of the season, indeed more viewers even than the FCS National Championship. I am not sure but I believe that it was also in the top ten most viewed FCS matchups of all time.

Now, look at the bowls. 'Nuff said.

Some here have lamented that we didn't join or form a more regional conference. Much has been made of the travel involved in CUSA.
However, the academics I have spoken with love it. They tell me that the national exposure provides for increased collaborative opportunities, better exposure for faculty, recognition of programs, and substantially more diverse student applications.
Coaches like it because the exposure increases the scope of recruiting opportunities.
Conferences like it because it increases their television footprint.

I submit that, given our very short football history, and taken in it's entirety, we couldn't be in a better position, lumps and all!

Oh, I fully expect to; but I also remember that we are all college educated and this is just a game.

Not according to our JMU overlords. To them, we're just a bunch of goat-lovin' Hill Billies and sister-lovin' oyster shuckers muddling through 13th Grade State.

Who is JMU again? Oh that's right, it's where Starbucks sources their baristas.

More to your point - without doing any research - I'd bet that we've had more television views in the first half of this season than the prior 5 combined. This move to CUSA didn't hurt a single program that I can think of. Every team has been elevated in terms of competition & exposure - even the orphaned sports found better homes!

That's an interesting observation from the academics, et. al. about our conference affiliation. I hadn't really considered that perspective.

I think a regional conference sounds good in theory, but it doesn't really excite me all that much. I think there are too many compromises. In the CAA, we had to settle for 1AA FB and a watered-down BB league (sans VCU & GMU). If we had joined the A10, BB would have been great, but no FB. A regional conference with Appy, Real GSU, JMU, etc. would be good for FB, but the hit to BB would have been devastating (same for the Sun Belt). The AAC would probably be better in the long run, but the departure of Louisville and the wandering eyes of Cincy and UConn would give me piss-shivers.

I like CUSA. The BB is really good (and should get better), the FB is coming along nicely, and the conference footprint is essentially the same as the AAC. I think we'll be competitive with the MW and AAC as often as not for the access bowl. Both Marshall and ECU have proven that you can get national attention from these conferences if you build a competitive team. And if the CAA can receive multiple NCAA bids to the Big Dance, I see absolutely no reason CUSA can't do the same.

The only thing that would be ideal is if CUSA and the AAC decided to merge/restructure into two more regional conferences. But as Harry said in his Q&A, that will never happen as long as the TV contracts exist in their current form. So overall, I'm pretty happy with where we landed.

Wow, sounds like JMU has replaced Va Tech as Virginia's thug school.
