Will the Access Bowls be treated with the same respect as BCS Bowls were?
Will some of the shine be taken off the bowls outside of the playoff? Will they be viewed like BCS bowls were?

Probably not..........I mean why watch any of those "other" games involving teams from the B1G, ACC, B12 when you can simply watch 3 teams from the SEC and the PAC-12 champion play for all the marbles. 03-idea

Will probably lose a little luster but still be important.

Can someone explain to me how this works?

Let's see...at this very moment you'd have:
Rose bowl (playoff): FSU vs. Oklahoma?
Sugar bowl (playoff): Oregon vs. Alabama?

Then....
Peach:
Cotton:
Orange:
Fiesta:

Who would be in these bowls right now? Auburn Vs. Baylor Cotton bowl? VT vs. Georgia/MSU/ND orange bowl?

orange is tied to the the acc vs big10/sec/nd..so the highest acc team not in the playofff will auto get a slot and the highest rated of the big10/sec/nd

a G5 guaranteed 1 of the rest

the rest are rather simple and actually more fair than before...before bowl picked the most profitable team.. now it goes by ranking..after all auto slots are selected..the next teams in ranking order get the bowls..and the committee picks on location and interest in who faces who in which bowl for the remaining access slots

If the top 4 in the rankings are as you described, the following would take place:

Orange Bowl would be an ACC team (to replace ACC champ lost to Playoffs) vs B1G #2, SEC #2, or Notre Dame
Peach Bowl would be top G5 champion vs ???
Fiesta Bowl would be ??? vs ???
Cotton Bowl would be ??? vs ???

The 5 ???? slots will be filled by the B1G champion (displaced from the Rose Bowl in your scenario) plus top 4 remaining teams in the Playoff Committee rankings.

If I'm not mistaken, the committee selects the participants for each bowl (with consideration to "contractual").

Red is potential scenario based on two weeks and your playoff teams above.

Peach - At Large v Noncontract Team or At Large in nonplayoff years

Marshall v Georgia

Orange - ACC Champ or best nonplayoff team if ACC champ is in the playoff versus one of the B1G, SEC or Notre Dame.

Louisville or Va Tech v Notre Dame or Michigan St

Fiesta - At Large v Noncontract Team or At Large

Baylor v USC or UCLA

Cotton - At Large v Noncontract Team or At Large

Texas A&M or LSU v BYU or Stanford

I thought BYU could only play in the playoff or regular bowl (e.g. no access bowl)

BYU is not eligible for the automatic spot given to the top "G5" conference champion.
However, they (like all FBS teams) are eligible to fill any remaining at-large spots in one of the host bowls.

There is no restriction on the at-large spots. They are just filled with the top remaining teams in the playoff committee rankings after the playoffs spots and contract bowl slots have been filled and they've accounted for any displaced P5 champions.

I think any game where the selection committee is making the decision will be treated as a major postseason stage.

I know you were joking, but the reason to watch the "other" big bowl games is the fact they won't conflict with the only 2 games that really matter (the semifinal games). ESPN is running a triple header on New Year's Eve and again on New Year's Day so they can show the entirety of all 6 playoff bowls. They are going to be hyping this more and more as the season goes on. Unfortunately, that means the Peach Bowl is being played at 12:30 on New Year's Eve... at a time the majority of the country is working.

I think eventually the importance of all the bowls will diminish. Once the playoffs are in place of what significance is one bowl vs. another. Can you imagine the same discussion in the NFL?

Well, we did not make the playoff but we get to play Detroit in a meaningless game at a random stadium and have to buy 20,000 tickets for the ability of the bowl to pay a bunch of do nothings a salary to be on our committee. The game has no bearing on our ability to claim a championship or ranking or anything else of value for next year. sounds like a good deal to me.

I think the days of college football as we know it are numbered. Bowls will soon go the way of the dinosaurs.

One reason I like the AAC boards, they discuss the future of CFB. One of the thing i have noticed was this is the only boards that I have seen that really has discussed expanding the playoffs or bowl improvements. I have not really seen that on the other conference boards. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future but I don't see any major changes until 2026. The one cool thing about bowls is that it offers a team a chance to play for something even when the playoffs are out. In addition, coaches are not going to want to give up that extra practice time that comes with bowls.
