I like this idea best. Play it in your cultural center - and were so many prospects come from. That is why NYC worked so well for the Big East over the years and why Chicago would work so well for the B1G.
I must admit though that I am intrigued by the idea of playing it at Hinkle Fieldhouse. That would be a very cool twist on the conference tournament thing. It wouldn't make much gate money but it would definitely be a television spectacle.
I think it is very obvious that MSG is going to stick with the Big East going forward. They have a great history together and an ironclad contract going forward. Besides, each's identity is at least somewhat tied up in the other.
I thought at the time these rumors initially started to fly, and I still think now, that the ACC and the B1G were both dreaming when they thought they could just walk in and wrestle it away from the Big East. Madison Square Garden is an inherent part of the Big East's very identity. There was no way they were ever going to give that up. That would be like the Big Ten or the Pac-10 voluntarily giving up the Rose Bowl.
Never going to happen.
I think the ACC quickly recognized that reality and changed course to the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. The Barclay's Center is not MSG and it never will be. There is just nothing like the energy of midtown Manhattan anywhere else in this country. However, if you want to get into New York City, Brooklyn was most realistic good option available and the ACC was wise to choose it.
I also believe that the ACC should make the Barclay's Center its permanent home for future tournaments but that is a debate for a different day.
