Big Ten has no easy answer to reverse football failures
I know many of you think that Drew Sharp is a talentless hack, but when you are able to get quotes from current coaches that share a similar lament, it's hard not to notice...

There is no answer to their problem. Few want to live there, or go to school there. If you are a healthy athlete, you want to go to snow belt or the sun belt.

To back it up currently 23 of the Top 30 Recruiting Classes for 2015 are either SEC/ACC or Pac 12.

People will live anywhere if the jobs are available and the Midwest does have many advantages that can mitigate the weather issue.

To be far, that's 40/64 schools, so you would expect 20/30 to come from those conferences.

That article has some truth to it but look at the example of Oregon. Oregon has built a nationally competitive team with a poor local recruiting footprint. The bulk of their top prospects come from greater than 4 hours away, mainly from California. As far as climate, Eugene sucks compared to anywhere is Southern California.

Now playing in California certainly helps in recruiting California kids. So expansion into fertile recruiting grounds should then help the Big 10 talent base as well. The question is can and will the Big 10 expand all the way into Texas, Florida, and or Georgia in an effort to save its football.

But the Big 10 has 5 teams with top 25 recruiting classes. Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Michigan State are all top 25. Nebraska falls just outside. That's pretty much every power program in the B1G.
The predicted demise of the B1G is premature IMO. I don't think any conference save the SEC can boast of 6 programs with the history and revenue generating capacity of the 6 listed above.

RE: Big Ten has no easy answer to reverse football failures
I think that there simply needs to be more commitment to fewer sports. If you look at the average number of teams in the SEC versus the B1G you'll notice the B1G has on average 7 or more athletic teams. When you also consider that revenues are roughly the same what you quickly conclude is that the SEC has on average more money per sport. This allows them to pay assistants far better than most programs in the B1G. Add on top of that the greater preponderance of high school talent in the sun belt region and you have (generally speaking) more talented coaching staffs and more talented athletes. Recruiting budget increases can address the latter, the former must be addressed by aggressively increasing compensation for assistants and stepping up facilities upgrades

I have no sympathy for the B1G's woes. Not after they tried to dismantle the ACC by snagging Maryland. (It was inevitable they were going to get MD due to MD's financial situation and the school's president and AD having previous ties to the B1G).

They'll be ok. The only thing they have going for themselves is their network... Which is another reason not to feel sorry for them. :)

I think Oregon is a bad example because of the schools affiliation with Nike. Without that particular brand association, the Ducks performance would mirror the other PNW teams.

RE: Big Ten has no easy answer to reverse football failures
I think they are just in a normal cyclical down cycle. But some has to do with coaching. The SEC has more good coaches than anyone else. I've read, but haven't seen any numbers, that Big 10's assistant pay lagged the SEC and Big 12. So they were losing their best assistants. The Big 10 areas have always done well with offensive lineman. Its just the speed positions they tend to lag in the recruiting services. Florida schools have done well and Florida HSs haven't produced any outstanding college QBs in ages.

Why don't you repeat that comment to a UConn, Cincinnati or USF fan? Really, an ACC fan talking about another conference being predatory?

Michigan St and Wisconsin are not top 25, Mich St is 27 and Wisconsin is 28.

So if you look right now at ESPN top 25....
SEC 10 + 3 26-40= 13 top 40
ACC 5 + 3 26-40 = 8 top 40
B10 3 + 3 26-40 = 6 top 40
P12 3 + 2 26-40 = 5 top 40
B12 3 + 4 26-40 = 7 top 40
ND 1

So Big Ten and Pac 12 are the only 2 conferences that don't have at least half their schools in the top 40 right now.

Big fish eats smaller fish. That's just the way it is. The 2 conferences could've coexisted, but the old Big East was all about basketball. The ACC too, but the ACC put more effort in trying to make itself a football conference.

If you really think about it. If the Big East would've grabbed Penn State, the Big 10 probably would've stayed a Mid-western conference and would've probably expanded with Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri instead.

Is AC/C destroying the B10? That's right "Air Conditioning/Comfort" at one time the B10 schools could say the heats as unbearable in the south & west as the cold is in the mid-west. No more because at best today these conditions are equally one another out. And today's athletics are use to being catered to.

"We, licked em again Josie". (Not in a physical way now mind you).

If the Big 10 expanded into North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida their recruiting would be no better than it is now. Southern kids are going to play near home if they can. And they will want to go to a conference that turns out pro athletes and that is the SEC and ACC in the Southeast.

RE: Big Ten has no easy answer to reverse football failures
even with yours- 11 of the top 13 classes are SEC or ACC.

and still-
SEC- 9 top 25 + 2 26-40= 11 top 40 (and 41,42)
ACC- 5 top 25 + 7 26-40 = 12 top 40
B10- 5 top 25 + 2 26-40 = 7 top 40
P12- 3 top 25 + 1 26-40 = 4 top 40
B12- 2 top 25 + 3 26-40= 5 top 40
ND- 1 top 25

So SEC and ACC have 23 top 40 and 25 top 42.

Both these show one thing pretty crystal clear- look at the Pac 12-
ESPN 5 top 40
247 4 top 40

Boise has done well given the lack of regional high school talent. However one thing that has to be considered.

If you look at where a lot of their talent comes from, they live near a city that offers a direct flight to Boise.

That's sort of an X factor in recruiting now.
