Well, if you go to the original Inside NU SB Nation post that the quotes come from, in the comments, you hear a lot of the usual P5 garbage about how they are getting better recruits and should never be losing to a MAC school.
OK. I get it. We said the same thing when a very good EIU team pushed us to the brink a year ago.
However, anyone who watches that game will immediately notice that the team in white was hellaciously fast compared to the plodders in purple. They were also physically stronger (see: Jason Meehan & Perez Ford ritualistically taking sh*ts in the decapitated heads of NU linemen on every play). Sorry guys, your star rankings don't spot you 20 points at the beginning of the game. It was obvious that NIU had the more talented players Saturday.
Now, is Northwestern gutless? Maybe. But who recruited those guys? I suspect NU has a different gear that they haven't shown yet this season, but will they ever show it? Not if the coach is calling his own team a bunch of pu$$ies in week 3.
It cracks me up that the NU fans still don't seem to be able to wrap their heads around the idea that Pat Fitzgerald has had the longest honeymoon in college football history. He hasn't answered for how that program, coming off a Gator Bowl win the day we played in the Orange Bowl, has found every possible way to lose in the next 20 months. And, got their d*cks kicked in the dirt by one of those "MAC teams" that seem beneath their contempt. Just like how there's a hell of a lot of difference between them and Ohio State, there's a hell of a lot of difference between us and the Eastern Michigan team that they play almost every year. Not acknowledging that is intellectually lazy.
And they should know better. They rose to prominence the same way NIU has, by taking guys that were a good fit for what they did. And they've (or at least their program) lost sight of that.
F*^k Northwestern.
