ESPN - Eric Dickerson: SMU 'doesn't exist'
Quote:Former SMU running back Eric Dickerson didn't mince words when it came to his alma mater's issues on the football field: Either fix it, or get rid of it.

"I talked to four former players yesterday, and we all said if they don't want to do anything, just kill the program," Dickerson told 105.3 KRLD-FM in Dallas on Tuesday. "Just stick to academics and basketball and kill that program.

"It's so frustrating for us to watch SMU become nothing but a laughingstock or almost non-existent. It's almost like it doesn't exist."

They built a new stadium, payed a coach $2mm and went to bowls 4 out of the last six years including three wins. WTF am I missing? They just renovated the Bball arena, I am sure upgraded FBall assets will come next.

Well first of all, SMU closing its doors would be a terrible blow to the American. Dallas Market is important to us.

SMU has shown a willingness to support the program. The June Jones hire was a sign of that. It's not SMU's fault for Jones checking out after the Bowl win. He just got lazy. But SMU's financial commitment and reinvestment in the program is real. The buyout clause wasn't exactly cheap.

Serious question - I wonder how much help Eric Dickerson has provided to SMU over the last several years (financial or just support in general by showing up for games, appearances to help the program, etc). Perhaps it is a lot, but I don't know.

RE: ESPN - Eric Dickerson: SMU 'doesn't exist'
SMU was on the rebound until the ASU fiasco with June. For $2M SMU should be able to bring in a quality coach who can right the ship. However, this quote from the article was disconcerting...

Quote:"It's a tough question," Dickerson said Tuesday about the Mustangs' future. "The main thing is getting the help there, and I think June has been frustrated the last couple of years with not getting the help that he needed from upper management in the university."

So Eric believes that the problem was not June, but the SMU administration. Is there any truth to that?

I assume Dickerson was a Jones supporter

RE: ESPN - Eric Dickerson: SMU 'doesn't exist'
1. Do not EVER drop football. EVER. It is the single dumbest thing any school can ever do.
2. For all the great play he had on the field, isn't he one of the players that got SMU in the mess they were in that's ultimately led them to where they are today?
3. SMU has some pretty nice digs to play/practice in. Not sure what he means by investing, but the days of giving cars and BJ's from hookers to recruits are pretty much over.
4. Rick Hart is an outstanding athletic director. He turned football around at a place that the only traditions they had were Terrell Owens, Pez Watley, and Mr. Belding. Two of the three didn't play football, and the third honestly was a better basketball player than he was football. If they allow him to spend the right money for a head coach/assistants, I have zero doubt that SMU football will compete for championships at the conference level in five years.
The sad thing is Eric Dickerson is clearly too stupid to realize that his comments hurt the program he loves more than it helps.

SMU had the highest paid coach in the AAC. Granted, it turned out not to be the right guy, but I don't see how you can accuse them in not "investing in football".

I think Tubberville is the highest paid coach.

Dickerson doesn't understand the economics and like most, associates anything non-P5 as a lack of commitment when in reality we are being shutout because of the TV contracts not commitment. He sees Bball doing well and wonders why FBall isn't seeing hte same national success, but he doesn't understand that the money side (expenses and revenue) are different in FBall. He should shut his mouth, IMO.

If SMU is willing to pay the right guy the same amount of money they were willing to pay Jones they'll be fine. Jones just decided to quit trying that's not really SMU's fault.

My thoughts exactly. Hard to put any value in Dickerson's opinion since he was "getting paid" to play football.

People said the same thing about the Memphis football program a few years ago. Look at what's starting to happen now? Stay the course SMU!

RE: ESPN - Eric Dickerson: SMU 'doesn't exist'
Now do you guys care what he thinks?

Dickerson didn’t explicitly say that SMU should return to breaking the rules, but he does believe that cheating is rampant in college sports — and necessary to compete with the big boys.

“They still cheat. All of the schools still cheat. The big schools still cheat. You think Texas isn’t cheating? You think A&M isn’t cheating? You think Alabama ain’t cheating? Yeah right. That’s laughable…You ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying.”
