CSN joins thousands of other sites in #InternetSlowdown Day
We are happy to join sites like Reddit, Mozilla, Ubuntu, Canonical, Meetup, Vimeo, Netflix, imgur, EFF, Kickstarter, Wordpress, Wikia, Boing Boing, and countless other sites spanning the entertainment and political spectrum today to stand up for net neutrality. It is bad enough when most of the country only has one or two choices for high speed internet service which is typically capped, throttled, expensive, and for more costly in terms of dollars per megabits than most of the western world. Just imagine if we let those same ***clowns create tiered speeds on top of that. Netflix pays to get on the internet. You pay to get on the internet. You shouldn't have to then both get shaken down mafia protection money style to actually get a decent level of service for what you already pay through the nose for.

RE: CSN joins thousands of other sites in #InternetSlowdown Day
I know I'm in the minority, but I'm a lot more split on net neutrality than most. I get the arguments for it (and am not well versed enough in to say I'm 100% against), but on the flip side, if person A/company A is using only basic online features, it makes sense they'd have the option of taking a service that is less powerful than person B/company B that uses a lot more services. Some people are going to end up spending more for the same or getting less internet, but on the flip side, others will be spending less and/or getting more.

The solution I have, and what sounds like you'd be okay with, is to treat the Internet like the utility it has become. Like electricity it should have peak and off peak times, since the capacity is more or less static and demand dynamic. You pay for what you use ... but like electricity it should be stupid cheap (particularly during off hours) and have pricing tiers where it gets cheaper the more you use.

Ok, thanks, was actually looking for the support forum to complain about the new annoying ad that won't go away. So, this is just for the day, right? I can live with that.

Pop-ups for awareness!… how Susan G. Komen of this board.
Perhaps “Net Neutrality” should get their own color too.

RE: CSN joins thousands of other sites in #InternetSlowdown Day
A slightly edited post I made here back in May on this issue:
I'm very much in favor of net neutrality. Startups that don't have the resources to pay for faster access to end users will suffer, and that's bad for innovation. Cable companies are struggling to support a dying business model rather than adapting.
The solution is to classify internet service providers as common carriers so they have to provide equal access to everyone. Internet providers should be classified as utilities. That really is what they are.
In some ways ISPs are already treated as if they are common carriers. For example, they aren't held responsible for the activities of their end users. If an ISP is simply in the business of transferring data to and from a user, they have no liability for the actual contents of that data. That's why an ISP isn't held liable if a user is transmitting illegal content such as violating the DMCA or if the user is launching attacks against other computers. Since ISPs aren't in the business of inspecting traffic and treat all traffic equally, they aren't liable for this behavior. Although ISPs are classified as information services and aren't technically common carriers, they benefit from some such protections.
If net neutrality ends and the ISPs take an active role in giving better quality of service to certain traffic, then they are in the business of inspecting traffic. In that case, an ISP ought to forfeit other benefits they get from acting like common carriers. That is, any ISP that is providing tiered service based on the type of traffic ought to be held responsible for the data that is moving through. If ISPs are in the business of tiering types of traffic, they ought to forfeit any common carrier protections, and thus be liable for users who do illegal things like sharing pirated music, movies, and software. After all, the ISP no longer acts like a common carrier, so they shouldn't enjoy any such protections.
I really don't want an ISP snooping through traffic, nor am I convinced it's feasible for them to do so for the purpose of filtering illegal content. Rather, I'd like to think it would make tiering traffic based on its type so undesirable that net neutrality would be preserved.

You should pay for what you use.

RE: CSN joins thousands of other sites in #InternetSlowdown Day
I know little about this issue except the bottom line that the companies able to provide high speed service are the exact same companies that are able to provide cable television. What they are are saying is, "if you are going to drop cable to avoid the $150 per month we are charging you for your cable service, we are going to charge you $150 per month to get your programming over the internet. One way or another, you will pay."

RE: CSN joins thousands of other sites in #InternetSlowdown Day
Very annoying. I had to open a different website to see if it was only this one because I thought my work PC caught a virus. My anti-virus has been asking daily for a shut down and update but I've been procrastinating.
Thanks for scaring me, GTS.

What we really need is a power grid blackout to see who could survive and who couldn't...
