RE: Mike Schikman out as "Voice of Dukes"
he will always be the voice of the Dukes... growing up as a kid, whenever I wasn't at games, I was home playing toss with my dad in the back yard listening to him on the radio call JMU games

I'm conflicted on this. On the one hand, he drives me crazy with his wildly incorrect calls... on the other hand, as others have said, he most definitely roots.

I think you are being serious. The fans in the top of the 400 level seats sections 404 - 409 can reach the bottom on the press booth, it is a fantastic place to create a lot of noise by slapping your hands against it under the bottom (the overhang). The folk in the press didn't take kindly to it, evidently a lot of noise came right on up into the booth.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read the article. We'll never hear anything from Bourne.

I consider the JMU fan base lucky when Bourne does not speak, nearly everything he says portrays JMU athletics as very comfortable playing the small time role.

I wish schick well.

This is an internal employment issue that affects someone's livelihood. It would have been inappropriate for anyone employed by JMU to comment. I thought Jeff said all he could say about it.

Agreed. From what I read Shick will call the remainder of the football season but men's basketball is up in the air.

The biggest difference is he'll be able to have a cold one 04-cheers with us before the game and won't have to head in early. You should all seek him out to thank him, I promise you'll leave with a smile.

Wow. Tony Mecurio probably just ate his weight in meatballs. Can't image how he'll react when he hears the news about Schikman.

Here's another who will miss the Schik's calls!

Have not gotten to hear MM call games yet. But I think Curt Dudley and Mickey would be a great pair. The straight man and good ol' boy, like Dan Shulman and Bob Knight/Dick Vitale calling ESPN hoops. Not sure if an offer would be made by the school that canned MM, or if he would even accept...

Yeah, nice interview. Really does not seem that old to me. Perhaps due to my age....

There's a story there that I guess we'll never know, unless Barkers finds out....

Bottom line is that the radio station found someone who would do the broadcasts for less money. Nothing to do with performance or how much Mike was liked by listeners. It all came down to money. JMU does not pay Mike for games. He is an employee of Verstandig (WSVA) Broadcasting.

I find this somewhat curious since Mike Schickman actually has a role at the radio station other than broadcasting JMU games, and other than sports. The new "voice" seems to have a broadcasting presence but feels really raw to me. TIme will tell I suppose.

Schickman's commitment to JMU athletics, especially given he was not an employee, is/was really a special thing.

Sounded to me like he expects to call some more games from time to time during the overlap of seasons. Or, perhaps to fill in. A really great ambassador for all things JMU and a good friend.
