Cal to have UK only combine
Sources: John Calipari plans combine

Quote:Kentucky coach John Calipari is putting the finishing touches on a two-day scouting combine for NBA teams, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

The event will allow the Wildcats to showcase their players and eliminate the distraction of NBA scouts visiting throughout the season, and it will inevitably be a recruiting tool for Calipari for future classes.

One NBA executive told ESPN.com that the event, to be held Oct. 10-11, is a "great idea" because scouts can make their observations in one weekend and it "limits the parade of NBA guys in practice."

To bad he doesn't have an NBA team in Lexington that can evaluate his players all season long.

I can't think of him as a man--more like some type of reptile/human hybrid. No need to fear his antics but he bares watching. When the weaknesses fully present themselves...many will strike. lol

I wonder if the NCAA will allow them to keep this as exclusively for Kentucky players? Could other players from other schools come and participate?
I would think that th NCAA would have to require it be "open".

It is a great idea, btw.

Cal's got a good idea....and the UK players really don't need to be evaluated all season long. Beginning of season or end of season....won't change much.

Yeah, because a 2-day dedicated focused workout really shows what a guy can do rather than monitoring him throughout the season.

Maybe a good idea, maybe not. We'll see.

Maybe the NCAA will pass another Calipari rule next year outlawing this.

Doubtful. This is essentially the same thing most football programs do with Pro Day in the spring. I think some baseball programs have a Pro/Scout Day during fall practice.

I don't see this being much of a recruiting advantage since any team can do it and turnout by scouts and agents would really vary depending on the potential talent you have on the team at the time.

Whether or not this is a good idea for the NBA teams is irrelevant, this is a GREAT idea for UK. Sets them apart, and positions them as more and more of an NBA-U, which is what Cal has been successfully selling. I hate them so damn much.

should catch on with other college programs quick enough. however, theoretically, unless you have more than one of these through the year, there'll be no substitute for seeing players in action against good competition, imo.

RE: Cal to have UK only combine
Cal is doing this primarily for recruiting reasons, as has been pointed out. But I'd venture to guess there are team chemistry reasons as well. In December, when a hot shot freshman is trying to get his instead of playing team ball, Cal can say "the time to impress scouts was at our combine, they've already seen what your capable of doing. Now its time to win basketball games."

I think they'd want to see the development over the season. That's not an issue at UK.

RE: Cal to have UK only combine
This seems more like a recruiting gimmick than anything else.

Maybe I don't understand, but I thought scouts were allowed into games and practices at any time, no matter how Cal spins it. And wouldn't the scouts want to see the KY players at the end of the season, especially if there are injury questions?
