RE: Watch parties-A&M game
Unfortunately, the meager attendance at the New Orleans watch party for the Notre Dame game didn't merit doing another one. I'll try again if Rice makes the CUSA championship game (or for a bowl game if I can't attend in person). I was going to do a combined one with the A&M alumni, but that would only be fun if I could get 10+ people!

Been there. Tried to do that. Unsuccessful. Not interested in a second wasted trip.

The place will be full of ags and wannabes.

I was literally the only Rice person here for the ND game, so the atmosphere ... left much to be desired. That said, I may still go, because the location is 10 minutes from my house.

RE: Watch parties-A&M game
Are these events being organized by actual alumni or just the alumni office? I know that the Boston event should have at least the organizer in attendance, plus any of the rest of us who show up.

That said, Saturday night is going to be a tough sell for getting people to watch a game we're not exactly expecting to win.

I've organized watch parties in San Jose, with the encouragement of the alumni office. And I know that others have done the same in recent years in Palo Alto and San Francisco.

There's a big difference between "Hey let's all meet here" and "There is a reserved area for Rice fans." Despite the fact that they're published by the alumni office and/or the athletics department, I think those of us in Houston for the season opener learned which was which when it comes to these watch parties. Unless we the alumni/parents/fans are willing to either (A) do the legwork to no kidding reserve a space or, (B) show up bright & early, I wouldn't expect much to change. That said, I was also guilty of completely forgetting that LSU and Wisconsin were in town and was a little surprised when I showed up at Little Woodrows...

As a host, I would always do A & B ... plus try ahead of time to drum up fans to join me. (One of these days, I may actually meet Bay Area Owl in person! :-) )

It surprises me greatly that apparently no one did any of that for any of the Houston ND-game watch party venues.

Most if not all of these are organized by alums, not the alumni office.

I checked with Alumni Affairs today and got some further information:

The watch party has been officially arranged with BWW management, and there is a volunteer host who will be on-site at game time. However, 1 or 2 additional volunteer hosts are needed to help with the pre-game period. You would need to arrive about 6 pm and help set things up. I've done this sort of thing before and I can promise you that (1) it is important, (2) it's not hard, and (3) it is VERY appreciated. In this case, I think those 1 or 2 volunteers will make a huge difference in the success of the event.

If you can do this, please contact Suzanne Boue in alumni affairs at (713) 348-6954. She can then tell you about the detailed arrangements and what you'll need to do. (If you also want to reply on this message board, you can; but the important thing is to call Suzanne.)

Thank you in advance to those who have already volunteered, and to those who are about to do so.

Is that official? I haven't received any communications about the Austin watch parties. Was wondering how this is communicated since many aren't on Parliament.

I'll still be going to Cover 3, even if I have to sit in a crowd of Ags - I have less than zero desire to go downtown on a Saturday night </grumpyoldman>

(but, yes, the official web page has been updated with El Arroyo.. https://online.alumni.rice.edu/default.a...entID=2016)

Houston watch party was well attended. Glad to have former owls, current owls, an owl parent and former players in attendance. Hoping to see everyone at HRS next weekend when we take on ODU.
