The formula for the rankings uses measures such as admission rates, graduation rates, faculty resources, financial resources and results of peer surveys. I imagine faculty resources and financial resources are holding us back in these rankings at the moment.

RE: 2015 USNWR Out
Question -- does anyone believe that the US New & World Report rankings reflect the actual quality of education that ones receives at these institutions?

RE: 2015 USNWR Out
I would agree completely--U.S. News is more a measure of prestige than quality. That said, it's the "go to" source for those too lazy to really investigate quality at the program level. And quality is subjective too; the needs of any given student may be better served at a lower ranked institution than a higher ranked one. Great leaders in all fields have risen from obscure colleges; alternately, a pedigree from one of the best may open doors initially but there must be talent and substance to sustain a career.

Still, very good news. UC would enter the ACC or B12 above several current members of those conferences. Congratulations to UC leadership and faculty for continued growth in research, academics and athletics as a nationally recognized institution.

RE: 2015 USNWR Out
I agree with the "prestige" element to these rankings. CBS morning show had a guy from USNWR on the show. He gave a cursory review of the rankings and measurements. He indicated the top 5 or 6 have pretty much been in the same position for over 30 years. Seems they just reshuffle the order from year to year. They asked why Princeton was number one. His answer focused on alumni involvement/support. He seemed to use that explanation later for a ranking change. What I thought was odd was the impression alumni involvement/support was his subjective interpretation. I did not hear him provide tangible evidence to support the statement.
