Mighty Martin Clippers
Break 56 game losing streak.

I cant do the math but that may go back to my stint there in 78-79. That was buckets, not oblong ball but I inherited a team that had gone 7-53 the three previous seasons.

Congrats to kids and staff!

RE: Mighty Martin Clippers
Found memories of my time helping build the winner there. First game they have won since my buddy left. His last game was a playoff loss. Then 56 in a row. He has done well at his current job. Funny what a coach can do. They went through 7 coaches in 7 seasons after he left.

Rebuilt in 1 year. 7-53 to 12-10 beating Decatur (then #1 class C in area) at the Raiders place. But in one word: no.

That's a pretty good one-year rebuild.

Stop yourself.

I had some good kids with some talent but they had been beaten down some. The previous coach taught them how to cheat so when it came to crunch time they didnt know how to suck it up and go but just lean on a lil chicanery.

Beat better teams and lost to inferior teams. If it wasnt for me they could have gone 17-5.

Great experience for me. Them? Not so.

Low light was the last regular season game at Bloomingdale. Senior night. Word filters into the lockeroom that all conference selections had been made and a Bloomingdale player had made it.
My seniors looked at me with puzzling looks. I excused myself and found our AD.

I asked, "When did they select AC? Wasnt I to be involved?" He apologized and said he forgot to tell me and faxed in a couple names. No one on the squad even made honorable mention.

Later at Watervliet I learned how political the process was. Veteran coaches vs new coaches. Trading a vote here and there. A lot of stuff already decided before the vote kind of stuff.

Bloomingdale had one win that year. Us, at that game. Memorable.

12-10 during that era of Clipper Basketball and beating Tom Gibson in his gym remarkable achievement, last game aside.

You should have been COY.

I liked Tom. Good guy. Felt the respect and it was mutual

2 years later we invited him back at Watervliet and beat them again.
Highlight was whomping on Mattawan then a class C squad with asst Marc Throop squirming on the bench.

RE: Mighty Martin Clippers
My short lived basketball coaching career happened at martin. Freshman basketball. We went 18-2 with good players but lost to bdale after beating them by 30 at home. Learned a big lesson that day as a young coach. One of my goals that game was to get our 11th guy points and a few homer calls later and poor coaching we couldn't close the deal. That group went on to win 3 games as varsity players but excelled at football as jr and Sr. Maybe I was coaching the wrong sport. The next season was more fun with no talent but smart kids and 1-28 felt like 20-0. Had a great little point guard that went on to make a poor choice in college becoming a chimp but has turned out to be a great lite football coach. Very good times for me in martin. Hard to leave.

Throoper didn't get smarter or religion until later.

No and I have very good friend in Richland and they have told us the same. I havent seen Marc since that evening. It closed a chapter for me and we moved on. I understand he recently had hip or knee replacement and is back gigging as AD at Gull Lake. Love his wifes popcorn products. I must get 6 bags a year from those friends.
