From an outsider who has visited BG on many occcasions...

Check out Mariah's. Never had a bad meal there. Ate there last week, in fact-- right next to the new minor league baseball park.

Did they tear down the old Mariah's ? Were they closed for a while ?

Also, Rafferty's may be a local chain, but a damn good one. Always wished we had one here in Murfreesboro.

WKU - places to eat question
Bowling Green has the highest restaurants per capita in the nation. Plenty of choices!

You will not be disappointed, haha....My uncle and aunt own it with my aunt usually there working in restaurant....I am biased but she is a great cook and also makes from scratch all kind of desserts too..I recommend the banana pudding as well......ALso on Wednesdays pork sandwiches are on special and really cheap....

Smokey Pig blows.... Whitts is way better.

I can't believe all you guys are giving the visiting fans chain restaurant names....Montana Grill, Rafferty's, Double Dogs, Wild Eggs, Mister B's.

For original restaurants head downtown. Try Burgr and Bun for gourmet hamburgers and their dauphine potatoes. Or Entourage is a very good tapas bar.
For something fancier 440, The Bistro, or Verde are all very good fine dining places.
Lost River Pizza is a great place to get a beer and pizza.

Two things:

1.) I can see how the Smokey Pig style of BBQ may not be for everyone, but in no way could I ever say it blows. It is unique and different (and delicious IMO) which is what makes a BBQ place stand out. Whitts, while it is good food, carries nothing but things that you can get at any BBQ place in the country. It's kind of boring with nothing unique about it (sorry 518). It's also a chain which you made clear you wouldn't suggest to an out of towner.

2.) I agree about the local restraunts especially downtown, but the OP specifically asked for BBQ and breakfast. I listed Smokey Pig, Judy's Castle, Home Cafe, and Wild Eggs. Three local places and one chain.

While all of the rafferty's group are chains, they are BG originals. Also most of the ones you listed have already been mentioned. Finally, if you say Monroe County BBQ you have no business in a thread like this.

My aunt hand makes a lot of the vegetables, desserts etc, which makes it unique and unlike chain restaurants.....Its not meant to be a place where you pay attention to everything but the food or be distracted from the actual food on your plate...The whole point is to focus on the food and in my biased opinion the food is way better than your average bbq place....The meat is slow cooked and actual time is spent on cooking the meat and than hand stripping the meat off the bone unlike most places...Also the meat is not covered up in sauce so you cannot taste the meat like other places such as smokey pig does....Ribs also are great! Maybe its just me but I had rather eat in a shack that looks boring as long as the food tastes great vs. 300 pieces of trash or antiques hung up to distract you from the actual food on your plate....

Pretty much every single BBQ place has home made sides and desserts, including smokey pig. Whitts is ok, but it is no where near as good as smokey pig. Smokey pig meat is only swimming in sauce if you get it dipped. You can have it dry or sprinkled, and be fine.

The distracting from the food bit. Do you have ADD or something? If decor distracts you from food, I cannot really help you.

^THIS^

I would go dipped xtra hot. It isn't extremely hot but absolutely delicious. Along with it being a dump there is a side room to sit in and eat that overlooks the river/creek and I always feel like the room will collapse but it hasn't yet. Sometimes the questions are quick and direct from behind the counter due to how busy it usually is around lunch time. Enjoy and let us know what you think.

KAjun, Mariahs changed ownership and with that was moved. The building still exists. I'm not clear on all the details but in a foggy memory something happened and it was threatened to be closed. Then the MR Restaurant Group (I think that is it), also local, bought it and moved it down next to the ball park as you stated so that it could be alongside the other restaurants they opened.

RE: WKU - places to eat question
I didn't read the reply's until now, but since I was coming from the North on I-65, I decided to hit the Smokey Pig. I got the large Pulled pork platter, not dipped. This pulled pork is typical of eastern North Carolina style pulled pork. They put mine on a bun, and the vinegar sauce is not heavy in the meat. I thought it was good BBQ having grown up in eastern NC. The Mac & Cheese was average, and the baked beans had real good flavor. The baked beans had too many onions for my taste. If they cut back some on the onions and mixed a little pulled pork in with the beans it would be pretty awesome though. It is still early and I love BBQ, so if I start getting a little hungry I will swing over to Whitts and try it out. I make a mean homemade banana pudding myself (Grandmother's recipe) so I may head over to try your aunt's for comparison. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Appreciate it man, I would recommend the ribs tonight if you already had pork for lunch....Also for bread, the flat cakes are really good...Green beans and beans also good! All this talk about my uncle's place makes me miss it, its been a while since I had Whitts, haha...

Sorry to stir up such passion about bbq 03-lmfao It's about if you like blonde or brunette (if you're a true bbq fanatic you'll get that 03-lmfao) Dowless's Eastern NC helps me get the proper image in my head on the sauce. Thanks for the other replies as I've got a list to consider for pre game meal & breakfast on way out of town
