Rivalry Question for MTSU Fans
MTSU plays WKU and Memphis the next two weeks.

Which team do MTSU fans consider the greater rival: WKU or Memphis?

I live in the Nashville area and graduated from MTSU many years ago. I believe the engrained hostility toward the Hilltoppers trumps the Tigers, but I could be mistaken.

RE: Rivalry Question for MTSU Fans
It's gonna be Memphis if you continue to call them "MTSU"...they don't like being called "MTSU"!!!! ;-) I made that mistake with UTSA fans when I called them "Texas - San Antonio" in a post a year or two ago. Do you get the feeling this is going to be a great year for your team? They gave UCLA quite a battle based on the final score last week...

For me it's Memphis. MT and WKU fans know they are both lucky to walk away with the win. Memphis fans are delusional and think they are better than us. I love to beat them. I love to see them squirm. If they were more reasonable it would be WKU.

Memphis by far. We compete for funding from the Board of Regents.

RE: Rivalry Question for MTSU Fans
We've played WKU more than double the number of times we've played Memphis and while we lead both, we lead Memphis by a much wider margin.

MT leads WKU 32-29-1

MT leads Memphis 17-8-1

It's WKU by a sizable margin for me, having said that, I'd be interested in getting you guys back on the schedule as soon as Vandy moves off.

As long as WKCC is a conference foe they are more important. If not I would rather beat Memphis. I am from west tn so I have more friends to taunt when we beat Memphis.

Prefer Memphis personally and plus we have an 11 game lead even though the Tigers always act like we suck. WKU series has gone on for longer, though.

RE: Rivalry Question for MTSU Fans
Tough call. On one hand Memphis fans have always acted like they are too good for us, which aside from basketball, is laughable. But there is the basketball issue. Now that we have finally turned corner from what was essentially just short of the death penalty we'll see if we can sustain basketball success too.

On the other hand there is more history with wkcc having been in the same conference on what is now three different occasions. So, it's a tough call and you've seen different views already in just the first page.

And then there is Vanderbilt. I think you would get some who would vote that. Vandy is even worse than Memphis though thanks to their annual welfare check they receive from the SEC and how that makes them feel about themselves. But we have a lot of history of playing Vandy in multiple sports (and a lot of Vandy dodging playing us as well). This is why I have a lot of respect for Colorado. They play Colorado St almost every year in football and not with a lot of success either but they keep renewing the series.

Being from Nashville and having followed MT since the late 60's; here is how I see it. Western Kentucky Rivalry is Numero Uno! ( So many great games and one helluva lot of alums cross over within the same families) From a marketing standpoint, there is no rivalry more important to MT than Vandy (Local Media covers everything they do and Nashvillians either love them or hate them but nobody just ignores the Dores)! Memphis and Middle have the greatest potential for intense annual showdowns and must renew their contract! Bottom Line is MT needs to play WKU, Vandy, and Memphis every year in all Major sports!!!! TRUTH IS WHEN WE DO THIS EVERYBODY WINS!

I'd put WKU 1a, Memphis 1b, and Candy 2. That's just me though. Either way, those are the "big three".

Colorado and Colorado State have played 87 times, a much more established rivalry.

For it to be a true "rivalry", don't both sides have to have a mutual dislike/friendly hate for the other? I don't think MTSU would rank in the top five for Memphis fans

I think that is his point. Colorado will actually play them thus allowing them to play 87 times.
