Is Charlie Too/Two Strong?
After watching BYU maul the Long Horns into ground beef (for the second straight year), Texas either doesn’t have the talent or was too tight during the game. I think Charlie came in “too Strong” with his players. Moreover, Strong should have run more read option plays for his athletic QB—like BYU did during the game and for the second straight year against Texas. I honestly see Texas losing at least four games this season and after “two Strong” years he will be gone. I like him as a coach, but the expectations are too high at Austin for the team it currently has. Consequently, was Charlie “too Strong” on his players and do you think he will be gone after “two Strong” years?

I think it was one game against a talented and disciplined BYU squad. While I don't think they're a great team by any stretch, they have enough talent to win 8 or so games and get their crap together. First year with a new coach almost always has some bad lows.

If you thought what BYU did to Texas was brutal, wait until Oklahoma gets their chance.

Success or the lack thereof in the R3 will determine Coach Strong's fate.

If I’m not mistaken, Strong dismissed several players off the team before the season and watched last year’s game film with players while questioning their talent. I don’t think that was the right strategy for a new coach of a questionable team. Eight wins two years straight will get him fired before his contract expires. You have to remember that big time boosters questioned his hiring to begin with:

BYU beatdown Texas even worse last year and the Long Horns did likewise to OU. However, will Texas give it their all for a coach that has questioned who they are as players and kicked some of them off the team before the season had even started....

Strong is a great coach but I never saw Texas as a fit for him. That said, if Texas gives him time to work those spoiled kids into shape he will win big there. I just dont see Texas giving him the time to do it, especially with Sumlin winning right next door. I hope Texas gives him 4 years.

I agree with you that he is not a good fit for Texas. In fact he should have kept driving the Coupe D-ville. I disagree with your comment that the players are spoiled. Instead, the fans and boosters have high expectations that this team can't reach and Strong questioned before the season started. I was watching ESPN today, and it was mentioned that Strong may have already lost his locker room.

I heard the same mumbo gumbo last year and what happened? Texas slaughtered Oklahoma like a lamb.

BYU might be a top team 10.

Mack Brown didn't question his team's talent when BYU beat them down like Strong has: he questioned his staff. I think this team might not give its best effort for a coach that kicked players off the team before the season started and questioned his players ability to play up to his expectations.

RE: Is Charlie Too/Two Strong?
Charlie has had to be a heavy disciplinarian this year with those boys. That has probably led to him not being heavily liked by the team. I think another ugly beat down by BYU may end up being a blessing in disguise for Strong.

Perhaps "spoiled" is the wrong word. I am implying that some of the players arent willing to put in the extra work that it takes to be sucessful at the highest level. I've seen ESPN today as well & Strong mentioned how few players showed up for film sessions during the week. Mack seemed to have a similar problem & it will take time for Strong to change that culture.

This is the guy's first year without his own personnel, relax a little. Texas has a culture problem and I genuinely believe Strong is the right guy to remake that program.

I think Charlie had the attitude that Texas isn’t Strong enough, so he was going to make the team Strong-er. The film room critiquing (which was more of questioning players abilities) and kicking players off the team was too drastic for a new coach trying to win over a new team. Texas was hanging with BYU until the second half. I don’t know what was said in the Texas locker room at halftime, but the team appeared to quit on Strong the second half (the announcers even “implied” this possibility) or maybe BYU has the Long Horns number…..

I absolutely agree with this. There are reasons that Mack Brown was failing, while Strong was competing for BCS slots at UL. When you are coming into a situation with problems, it is hard to turn it around on a dime. He needs a couple of years to reverse the culture and improve the quality of recruiting from both a talent and character standpoint.

This season is going to be a week by week thing. If he can get buy in from the current group, I could see much improved results later in the season. Unfortunately, Texas has its biggest tests early - UCLA, Baylor and OU.

RE: Is Charlie Too/Two Strong?
This is just my opinion.

1) CCS is an average sidelines coach at best.
2) CCS has a horrible knowledge of offensive football.
3) He has bad special teams.
4) Hurtt was the great recruiter, CCS is a good recruiter but not great.
5) He was lucky to have Teddy Bridgewater, who made him look good.
6) He did a decent job of fixing the mess that Steve Kragthorpe created at Louisville. We thank him for that.
7) CCS benefitted from a weakened Big East and playing in a weaker American Conference.
8) All this said, CCS is an average coach, who will struggle for three years or less at Texas, before he returns to the SEC as a defensive coordinator , which he is one of the best.

Kind of funny to see UL fans only saying this now. How come we didn't hear any of this chatter from them the previous 4 years?

What good would it have done he was winning. He won against a weak schedule. CCS should have stayed at Louisville and became a better head coach. But he got the Big Head and now Texas is sink or swim for him. I was never a CCS fan.

I’m predicting a new Long Horn coach after “two Strong” years....
