What exactly do you know about Duke football?
They lost early in 2013 at Memphis and to Georgia Tech, but then won eight in a row to finish the regular season 10-2 and win the Coastal Division in the ACC.....despite being predicted to finish last in the 2013 preseason league poll.
Yes, they lost to Florida State in the ACC championship 45-7.....something others did when facing the Seminoles.
And yes, they lost a bowl game by four points to Texas A&M ... Johnny Football's last college game.
USA Today's Paul Myerberg -- who still believes NIU should win the MAC West -- ranked them 24th in the preseason poll and said the following: There are three tiers in the ACC: Florida State, Clemson and everyone else. Duke strikes me as the best of the rest...."
You are like so many others on here moaning that Northern Illinois gets no respect but you're also not willing to give any. There's no doubt the Huskies deserve more respect, but that doesn't mean someone else may not have improved just because to you, "Duke is Duke."
Once again, if Northwestern is as pathetic as some on here want you to believe -- and Presbyterian has none of the tradition of Troy (remember they faced NIU in a bowl game?) -- why should Northern Illinois get any votes? BECAUSE WE DESERVE THEM, but right now, so does Duke.
Yep. Rankings this early in the season isn't solely based on strength of schedule.

Yes, Duke had a flukish season. They won 10 games for the first time EVER. The difference between NIU and Duke is we have been consistent, the only thing Duke has been until last season is consistently bad.
Elon is comparable to Presby. But Northwestern and Troy are definitely not comparable. Northwestern has the better program and has shown it over the last 10 years.

Again...the rankings aren't based on how a team has performed historically.

Not (purely) based on it, but can be heavily influenced by it, when it comes to early-season rankings. Point spreads are much the same way. You don't know how good the team is yet, so you go on some history to resolve question marks.
Say EMU was in NIU's spot right now. They crushed a lousy D1AA team, then beat NW 23-15 -- the NW team that lost 9 of it last 10 games. Would EMU have any votes at all? No. It'd take them crushing UNLV to get a vote or maybe 2, then beating Arkansas to get 10-20 or so votes. It'd take A LOT of convincing that EMU would be a Top 25 program, due to their record.

Influenced, yes, but my post had absolutely nothing to do about influenced I said based. That's two different things.
My earlier post talked about how teams ranking from the previous season is taken into account. So NIU/EMU isn't a good comparison at all.
