For example... Winning with 4 minutes to play and you want to burn clock. Why have a "passing QB" in the game when you know you are not going to throw the ball? You need to burn clock. You need to move chains. Maddie should come in and close it like a relief pitcher does in baseball.

For example... 1st and goal to go. Same as 3rd and short.

The problem the coaches have in naming a starter is that a different guy plays the best every day. If whoever starts the next game doesn't do well they'll have to put someone else in. I'm sure the coaches would love to stay with one guy if someone earns it. They tried to do that with McIntosh this week and he had an off day. Next man up.

Just like you don't want to have a "catch only" tight end out there, you don't want a pass or run only QB if you can help it because it limits your playcalling which makes the defense's job easier. The main reason NIU would employ a 2nd qb every once in a while (besides trying to prevent one from transferring out due to playing time, haha) is to rest the starter a bit because the QB takes a pounding in this offense.

Yeah they gave McIntosh more than enough opportunity to play the entire game, but he just wasn't getting it done.

As much as I hate the QB rotation...I agree, with how bad Mac looked (really bad!), Carey was completely right to yank him and go with something new.

However, this is far from over, I fully expect to see all 3 play next week in Vegas.

Wasn't too impressed with Hare. Sure he was an upgrade over McIntosh but that's not saying much considering Matt's performance. I'd expect Hare to get the start next week and Maddie will get some playing time and be more impressive and we'll have a "Anthony Maddie is our QB" thread.

RE: Drew Hare is our Qb
It should be Hare's job. They scored 23 points in the second half and the potential of the offense is astounding with Hare playing to the best of his ability. That's up to the coaches. Hare has a gunslinger mentality and that pass to Brown is the best throw I've ever witnessed from an NIU QB. Will hare struggle at one point? Probably when the defenses break him down. But that's up to the coaches to stay a step ahead our opposition. This game should have been a blown out but we had absolutely nothing on offense in the first half. Hare should get every meaningful snap. I would hate to see us rolling on offense and have Carey rotate QBs just because. We found a gamer we need to stick with him. I don't want the same thing to happen to Hare that happened to Chandler (even though injury played a role) his sophomore and early junior years. Let's give Drew all the support and opportunity to have a great career starting today.

Let's not mistake the fact that NW gift-wrapped this game for us. Had we been playin Cal, WKU, Illinois, or BGSU (or many others) we would have been out of this game after the first half. We found a guy who will give us a chance to compete and win. Let's not be like Toledo. If things are rolling and we rotate QBs it would be the dumbest thing to do. Don't be like Toledo!!!

RE: Drew Hare is our Qb
what???
I don't understand some of these comments.
Huskies played a great game. We beat a big 10 opponent on the road. Be happy!

Look, if this was my team, I would have told them at halftime how Huskies played even with Florida State for 3 quarters and tell them THAT is NIU. And that NIU should not be ties or losing to NU. We should be controling this game.

I don't know what carey told them but I think the Huskies did come out and take control of that game. Our D-line played outstanding. Our QB played very well. Our offense clicked when it got into rhythm.

After the game I would have spent 2 minutes telling them how proud of them I am. How they fought, like they should. How they played with the confidence that they should. HOw they accomplished what they should.

Then I would spent 5 minutes ripping into them for not putting that team away earlier and beaten them like we were capable of. We won by one touchdown and a 2 pt conversion. That's it. We missed a FG. We gave up a TD that should not have happened. We gave NU too many chances. And we allowed it to be too close. A better team will make us pay for that.
Then a last minute to tell them I am proud, and be ready to work this week because there is a lot of work to do-- but special propos to the D overall. :-)

Then I would take myself in a room look in the mirror and question some of my decision/ actions. It's time to find a FG kicker. Not a kick off guy/ FG kicker/ punter. Show me one guy in the history of football that has made that work. One guy. Don't waste your time. He doesn't exist. Our kick off's were not great. I haven't seen tape to see what is wrong on FG, whether it's the snap, the holder, or the kicker, but I repeat, one guy doing all that is not working. Coach- this needs your attention. And if you know nothing about kicking, as you have said, find someone who does-- before it costs us a game! Point 2- that tirade on Hare? Hmmm. I hope Hare would say it was all positive. But I don't know how that might play with recruits.

Personally-- great job everyone.

But note, USA Today headline says "NIU slips past Northwestern" instead of NIU beats or trounces, or demolishes, or manhandles NU. There is work to be done.

That's for films today, and it won't be five minutes. By the time the players walk out, they won't even really believe that they won yesterday.

It's the way it goes when you watch the film with the coaches.

Exactly. One particular point -- some linebacker made a nice hard tackle on something like a NU third and about 9. NU completed the pass over the middle and our linebacker made a nice tackle and got up pounding his chest and celebrating--- for making a tackle about 11 yards out on a third and nine. What? Why are you celebrating letting up a first down? I know he felt good about the tackle, but he will look silly when he sees it on film and realizes the situation. I would make fun of him for it. Actually I am.

Yep, no other teams ever make mistakes just Northwestern!

I thought the play calling was terrible the whole first half and some of the third..Passing game was working against NU(as evidence by what CAL did the previous week), but Mac couldn't throw a pass inbounds.

Hare looked great because he is more accurate. And eventhough when he runs it looks like Peyton Manning running, nobody expects it so it works.

RE: Drew Hare is our Qb
After some though and reading some quotes I have come to the conclusion that Carey and staff played Hare in hopes of exposing the NU secondary after the NU starting safety was injured.
Carey did say we planned on playing all 3 but the game was going to dictate playing time.

I have not watched the replay but I believe Hare threw to Brown on that post route 3 or 4 times. They sure seemed to be targeting the back up safety
