VB with a nice day today
After a tough 5-set loss at NC State last night, they rebounded today with a 5-set win vs. UConn and then a straight set win over Toledo to go to 4-3 on the season. They have a transfer from Florida State who seems to be doing well.

Hopefully the UConn win will help them get over their main bugaboo - their inability to win the 5-set matches. That win today broke a long losing streak in 5-set matches, dating back to the 2012 season.

Dang. I mean, yay for the volleyball team and everything, but I assumed this was a thread about Valerie Bertinelli. I was giddy that she and Eddie Van Halen might've gotten back together!! Alas…

But yeah, uh, way to go, volleyball. 5-set win. Woot. #OneSetAtATime (<--see what I did there? huh? huh? ya see?? Rimshot)

They have a solid team. The Florida State transfer is impressive and some of their best players are freshmen and sophomores. I don't know how conference shapes up but I'll bet you we're in the mix for the conference title.

In the military, when a unit gets a good commander, one who does the right things and sets the right tone, everyone does better. When you get an AD who has some energy and sets the right tone, wonderful things seem to happen.

We win the tournament at Marquette with a 3-1 win over James Madison. Lost the first game, but came back to win the next three straight.

RE: VB with a nice day today
All this volleyball talk got me thinking that it might be a good idea to consider adding sand volleyball as a Rice sport. It's not an official NCAA sport yet but I believe it will be within a year or two. Facility wise, I think it would be relatively easy to add sand volleyball courts near some of the existing Rice colleges - and it would be a fun sport for students to watch (and participate in when Rice wasn't using the courts).

I'm pretty sure you utilize the same roster for both indoor volleyball and sand volleyball (similar to cross country/parts of track and field), so it's not a case of new student-athletes (or perhaps you'll need a few non-scholarship players to add to both rosters but that's probably acceptable too). But the nice thing is once it becomes an NCAA sport, it will be considered a women's sport so if we ever wanted to add another men's sport (like soccer or swimming), sand volleyball might be enough to help the Title IX numbers towards that goal.

Also, it would be a good recruiting tool and we'd be among the first schools in Texas with the sport (I think HBU added it last year). My daughter is now playing middle school volleyball and it's pretty unbelievable to see how good some of the middle school and high school athletes are in Houston (and btw two of the best players on the team that's beaten her team twice in three days are daughters of former Rice athletes).

Note, the match on Saturday vs Stephen F. Austin has been moved from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. So catch some volleyball after the football game. Good move, athletics department.

RE: VB with a nice day today
Rice has another chance this week to beat a team that is receiving points in the coaches poll. Louisville received 5 points in the poll released today (37th). Marquette, who was 26th last week, is no longer listed (may have a point, but one point teams are not listed).

#Rice now ranks in the Top 50 in the NCAA in digs per set (37th-16.3), kills per set (43rd-13.8) and assists per set (49th- 12.8).
