RE: Flashback 2007: George Bush’s Frighteningly Accurate Warning Of What Would Happen
Afghanistan was once the training ground for terrorists. After the US invasion not so much. When the US leaves in December and there is NO US presence just like IRAQ, Afghanistan will fall (within weeks) and it will once again be the school for terrorism.

And every American who lost life, limb, or loved one will have done so in vain. Never fight a war that you don't intend to win.

Well of course. His comment is nothing we should be surprised at given our war and occupation strategy. We did not build the damn the "green zone" and that crazy ass US Embassy because we were not planning on occupying Iraq for decades. Rummy bluntly stated that his vision was for the US to be there for at least 50 years in order to install democracy. In other words....We took out Saddam...now we have to be the one to keep the peace rule with the iron fist. Im sure he relayed this to his puppet POTUS.

And of course, that's what was always wrong about the approach. I remember right after Baghdad fell, whoever Geraldo was working for (I think it was Fox by then) sent him and a camera crew to do a piece on the opulence of Saddam's former palaces. Their theme was that Saddam was a greedy, evil person, but my takeaway was that those should have been the first buildings down, but we left them because we were planning to be an army of occupation.
We should never go anywhere for 50 years. Go in with overwhelming force, kill everybody that needs killing, blow up everything that needs blowing up, offer no apologies, and leave--two years, absolute max.
I said that the idea of bringing democracy to Iraq was absurd because 1) it wouldn't work, and 2) we would destabilize the region in the process. I caught lots of flack from the neocons and their supporters on that. But guess what? 1) It didn't work. 2) We destabilized the whole region.

The Neocons will argue this point...but...I believe the founders were against standing armies for a reason.
