Are you guys watching the UTSA - Arizona game?
Wow UTSA looks really good! It is on Fox Sports one. UTSA up 16 to 13 right before the half. They will be a contender.

I think they are better than Marshall. With 37 seniors, they will be tough to beat.

RE: Are you guys watching the UTSA - Arizona game?
UTSA had a good chance to really put the hurt on Zona after they got a safety and then had the ball at midfield but couldn't get a first down and had to punt. Arizona marched down the field to take a 20-16 halftime lead. I have to say I am surprised at how small the crowd is at the Alamodome. No one in the upper deck and the lower sections not completely full. I would have thought after last weeks win at UH and with a Pac-12 team coming in UTSA would have created some excitement among the citizens.

Thanks for reminding us about the UTSA game. I'll switch between that and Luke Willson's Seahawks

What about the US Open? A huge upset is in the making (Federer down two sets but up a break in the third)

Well now I'm completely conflicted. I have tickets to the final and am counting on Djokovic and Federer. Keeping an eye on that

Better have it on now -- a few critical minutes coming up

UTSA looks great! They could win this game. It would be great for CUSA!

Quite a match. They've all been going well into the night all week. Looks like Monfils is fading, but thanks for pointing this one out!

I was talking to Eric Winston last night about the job Coker was doing at UTSA. He reminded me that Tulsa and Rice turned him down for a head coaching job. According to EW, Rice told Coker he wasn't "Texas" enough....whatever that means. Bailiff has done a good job, but it sure will be interesting to follow Coker and the UTSA program vs Rice and Tulsa over the next few years.

I said on here a few years ago that UTSA was going to be very tough very soon... and they are... and their fan support looks great and they have a tremendous facility. I realize they are probably more like UH than Rice from a standpoint of their student body (lots of part-timers), but they are also the ONLY game in a good sports town.

No disrespect to UTSA or what they have built. However, they are in a rather unique circumstance with a senior laden roster from the inception of the program. They return I think 20 of 22 starters.
It will be interesting to see how they leverage what appears that it will a successful year this year going forward.

My understanding is that Coker was asking over a $1 million from Rice and others, but Rice wasn't willing to pay that much. Coker had won a NC, but it was widely believed he was riding on others' coattails. Bailiff has had some ups but more downs, while Coker has steadily improved UTSA.

There are a lot of things to consider regarding Coker vs Bailiff.
In favor of Coker
-National exposure
-National championship
-Aside from alleged lazy recruiting, Coker is arguably a better coach (game management).
In favor of Bailiff
-Cheaper
-Knows Texas, and by that I mean Texas High school coaches know and like Bailiff
-Great recruitor
With Rice's high academic standards, I wonder if Coker could have turned around Rice as quickly. Remember, we get on Bailiff for the results of 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2011. But it is easy to forget that Coker walked into a brand new program. His team didn't play their first year in 2010. Then they played as a FCS independent in 2011 going 4-6 before moving up to the WAC in 2012 and CUSA in 2013. What Coker has done is remarkable and frankly speaks to the talent that is in Texas. I'm just not sure the turnaround would have occurred as rapidly at Rice given the academics and level of competition.
With that said, I think that they are a formidable program with enormous growth potential. Their defense is very good. I'm not as convinced regarding their offense especially with regard to Marshall.

I'm certain that UTSA didn't pay Coker $1mm/yr, but I had heard that as well.
Coker signed a 200k/yr contract with UTSA and currently makes about 350k... and rumors are he'll sign an extension worth around 450k/yr.
I don't know what his assistants make.

RE: Are you guys watching the UTSA - Arizona game?
No question that UTSA is the team to beat in the West but having now seen them on TV for both games..what I see
- Arizona was better team. Score was much closer than the game, control over line-of-scrimmage, etc. UTSA did a great job of hanging around and keeping crowd in game. Arizona's poor play calling in the 3Q kept game from being a blow-out when they self-destructed multiple times in red zone. Arizona clearly had a superior 'eye test'
- Houston had 6 turnovers. As we have seen w/ Coogs over the years, they are a bi-polar team. They have games like that against UTSA, Texas St, at SMU a couple years ago, etc. where they beat themselves. Not disrespecting UTSA but am saying that if we (or most teams) played a game where one team had that many more turnovers than the other, you would see similar outcome.
Bottom line for me after watching two UTSA games is that the scoreboard is painting a better picture for Roadrunners than the actual quality of the team. That will even out over the year.

Also ... with 20 out of 22 returning starters, UTSA may be a team that peaks early in the season compared to other squads.
Probably best to catch them later in the year with our younger guys getting more game experience under their belt.
