The numbers come from the reports to the US Department of Education. http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstList.aspx

Seems about right. Surprised no Clemson though?

FSU doesn't have to travel all that far to recruit and much of the talent is in-state. So recruiting trips aren't as expensive for coaches or recruits (officials) and tuition isn't typically high.

A school like ND who MUST recruit nationally and has higher tuition as a private school will spend more on football. But maybe that's all spelled out in the link (didn't click it).

Virginia Tech would have fit though.

It'd be analogous putting "Pitt University"

This list would be way more meaningful if they took tuition out.

For the state schools it really shows how much these are investing in the football program. For ND and Miami, its much tougher, they have to pay for private tuition rates which is much higher than state schools.

It's amazing that we didn't see the rest of the ACC teams, ( I get it that the private schools don't have to report (ie. Duke, Wake, BC and Syracuse), but look ND was transparent.

Since it's only the top 25 it's not that amazing. Also, EVERY SCHOOLS reports these figures to the Feds each year. It's all available online at http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/ .

LOL. Well the word "University" is in your official name and you are a university. GT gets called Georgia Tech University all the time and it's not in our name nor are we a university.

You had credibility until you linked a Bud Poliquin article. You made a fair point, but you lose all arguments by linking Bud Poliquin, even if he gets something right.

The UNC number is unbelievably low. I have a hard time believing there's uniform accounting here. I've said it before. I don't trust anybody's numbers. There's too much temptation to "adjust" the numbers to make it appear that spending is higher or lower than it is.

That's kind of my point. They are in a league of their own.

Spending that much despite being public and in Alabama is like being the tallest person at a giant's convention. It is absolutely amazing how much more serious they are than everyone else. That explains the almost yearly stupidity (killings, poisoning trees, etc.) that surrounds the Iron Bowl. They go to work when everyone else goes to play.

I am impressed there are 4 ACC in the top 4.

Also concerned that with some of the VERY wealthy schools we have in the ACC.....too many of those aren't up there.

Regardless, the ACC needs to double down on football or it won't last as a conference.
