RE: How the SEC destroyed Southern Miss Football
We are getting better, and we are beginning to see better recruiting.
That said, I can't see us winning a single game in-conference this year. C-USA is much improved.

Johnson was there for ONE FREAKING YEAR...at most...MOST he was responsible for 25 players and probably half of those were being recruited by the last staff. There were problems at S. Miss before he took that job the once in a 25-50 year season of 2011 overshadowed it and it was fools gold. Before that season S. Miss was 1 game over .500 three of the previous four seasons...

problems existed and a bad hire made it worse. But to put all the blame on a coach that was there for 12 months is crazy especially when there's been very little improvement for a coach that is 4 months away from being there twice as long as the evil monster.

I agree. Some USM fans just can't seem to put the Ellis Johnson chapter behind them. At the same time, they don't appear to be holding Todd Monken accountable for anything.

This Saturday a 1-25 football team will take the field against Alcorn State. And 32k plus fans will be there to watch them play. That's saying something. And is why we will be back.

That is truly impressive.

Honestly didn't read the entire article. Don't really have the time right now. But I kinda skimmed through most of it, and I think it's indicative of what's going on with society as a whole nowadays... blame others for our problems.

Programs can quickly rise, but programs can also quickly fall. It's probably fair to say that Southern Miss fans were always proud of their football program and patted each other on the backs for their many successes, and for good reason. But the moment they fall, some start pointing their fingers elsewhere.

I thought it was a good article, but one thing I disagree with is the premise that you have to run the spread to compete with the power conferences. The spread offense can certainly help in some instances, but take a look at some of the rising powers in the conference UTSA, UTEP, and North Texas, shoot even throw in UCF from the AAC, as more programs recruit athletes that excel in the spread, more of the "traditional" type football athletes become available.

Where you get into trouble is when you try to take a spread-type athlete, and force him to play in a conventional offense (or vice-versa). That's when disaster strikes. A first year coach should scheme to fit his talent, not the other way around.

Southern Miss will be back, as soon as they have the right coach (not sure if they do now yet). There is no reason why they shouldn't be near the top of this conference every year, and it will be good for the national perception of CUSA when they return to glory.
