I don't care that he is gay. In fact, I wish we'd go back to the days when people didn't disclose things like that unless you really knew them up close and personally.
The guy can play...and the Good Lord knows Dallas needs a defense....he was signed to the Cowboys practice squad.
Would his name even be mentioned if he hadn't announced that he was gay?

RE: Michael Sam signs with Cowboys practice Squad
Its a smart move for Dallas, because they need to find and develop some pass rushers more than any other team in the NFL.

If he can stay on the practice squad, he might have a decent chance of getting called up this year. I doubt he would have that opportunity with any other franchise this season.

Probably a best case scenario for all those involved, including Sam.

I do wish the cowboys had signed Jackson Jeffcoat as well. He actually put up a lot better numbers than Sam did in college. He also is an undersized DE, but of course his dad was a Dallas Cowboy DE sack machine (102.5 career sacks)

Undersized guys can make it in the NFL.
I remember the same argument being made about Elvis Dumerville who played for the Louisville Cardinals....now plays for the Broncos.

I suspect Jackson can play in the NFL, even if he is extra small. I think he is even 12-15 lbs smaller than Sam. He is about 245lbs. TINY

But everyone in college and at the combine said the guy is stronger than most 315 pound tackles and can bull rush any of them with ease. He had way more sacks and tackles for a loss than Sam and did so while facing a lot more double teams.

He has freakish strength, leverage and driving power.

He would be one of the smallest DE in the leauge though, if not the smallest. So he may never really get a fair shot.

Wow, so you were against his press conference were he came out? That's a surprise for such a staunch and passionate gay rights supporter.

People can generally figure it out anyways.

Its really easy to spot with a lot of people.

Fact is if he did not come out and got cut we wouldn't be having this conversation. Facts are he is just like about a hundred others who went to camp and did not make it. NO BIG DEAL. So why are we even posting about a guy who was not good enough to make it?

Dumerville plays for the Ravens now because Denver couldn't get his contract faxed in time. He led the league in sacks in 2009 even though he was considered "undersized."

Dumerville is one of my favorite players in the NFL.

When healthy he is a QB and OT's worst nightmare.

Sorry, but he's right. The media is at fault more than anyone for making the whole 'he's a gay athlete' thing bigger then it needs to be

RE: Michael Sam signs with Cowboys practice Squad
The media.

Ok...there was zero reason whatsoever for a gay athlete to hide who he was...something we would hope people do not feel, pressured to do...except for the media.

Now we know.

The only reason many gay people take abuse ...and because of that abuse remain hidden...is because of the media...so it is simply not a story when a gay man, for the first time, in the face of what nt long ago was crushing mistreatment, to open up bout it while leering big time football.

Hopefully, soon, this is not a big deal. But right now it simply is. Jackie Robinson was a
Big deal. Larry Doby was too. Decades later it was not a story. Michael Sam is a story. In a few years, hopefully not.

Oh God shut up with that stupid chit.

Micheal Sam isn't forced to stay in separate hotels, eat at separate restaurants, use separate drinking fountains, call all white men sir while avoiding eye contact, make 1/10th the salary of white NFL practice squad players, live his life as 3rd class citizen, ect.ect.ect.

Such an unbelievably stupid comparison.

I find the comparisons to be insulting in light of what those particular people actually dealt with compared to Sam.

Jackie Robinson didn't have the luxury of choosing between hiding the fact that he was black or revealing it to the world when he saw fit. He had no choice in the matter.

Jackie Robinson didn't have the luxury having virtually the entire national media praising him in unison and exalting him as a national hero before he even played a single inning.

Instead, Jackie dealt with teammates openly refusing to play with him, opposing players refusing to take the field, police threatening to cancel games over riots, stadiums being padlocked to prevent his team from even entering, open and constant death threats IN GAME at every stadium and everywhere else he went, separate hotels, separate restaurants, separate drink fountains, separate housing, separate schools, separate EVERYTHING in life.. ect.ect.ect.

Report on Sam. Discuss his status. But do not say he is the equivalent to Jackie Robinson. It does a disservice to both men.

And I have no problem with anyone calling any ideas stupid if they feel so. There is a world of a difference in calling someone names and saying an idea is stupid.

It's different when you can't hide what you are, and what-you-are brands you as less than a human being. Being thought of as Less than human is really really weird. I mean what would it be like not to be able to use the same pee/**** hole as that of another person? Kind of unimaginable these days.

Now for the big leap...All these athlete guys and gals have been showering together for years. I figure both men and women athletes are used to fact that some of their teammates prefer same sex experiences. It's the fans that need to get used to the idea....lol.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Hollywood will be signing Sam to a lucrative movie contract to tell his story at some point in the near future. His agent is probably already negotiating the contract, nttawwt.

RE: Michael Sam signs with Cowboys practice Squad
So now all you mocking the Sam story suddenly have become pure Jackie Robinson supporters.

The comparison being made was MEDIA attention...not the extent of the abuse or the conditions. Of course many of you think Gay people have no problems at all being themselves. But, in a similar vein that people, and a lot of people here, think because things today are not
as bad for minorities as they were in 1963, that no minorities can complain about anything.

Now it is...look, Gay people are not treated as badly as Blacks were so that makes their mistreatment not newsworthy.

I suspect, and can only guess, much of this minimizing of Sam is simple religious based overt in some cases and latent in others, anti Gay sentiment.

Feel free to move the thread...I was not the first to bring a salvo.

Thats the point.

There is no honest comparison of the media attention.

Jackie Robinson dealt with a massively negative and bigoted media in 1947, some 20 years before civil rights were even passed.

Sam was universally praised and anointed as a national hero by virtually all the national media before he was even drafted.

I also noticed your only rebuttal was to make nasty and disgusting personal attacks on. You suggested I am a racist or bigot, not because I said terrible things about gays or suggested I am against gay rights, but simply because I dared to honestly compare the DRAMATIC difference of the two mens situations and the media coverage around them. You even tried to drag religion into it.

Pretty stunningly ironic for someone who is trying to pass themselves off as having evolved beyond bigotry and discrimination.
