I'd like to get past the gimmicks and the slogans, I just want to see some competitive football.

1. Eastern opens the CC era to fewer than 9,000 fans.
2. The cinder block entrance "fail" gets mocked on ESPN's Not Top Plays AND Around the Horn.
3. Lackluster performance vs lowly Morgan State.
4. Reggie Bell inexplicably is named starting QB to a chorus of "who? Why?
5. Three key players get in trouble for vigilante justice at the scene of last year's murder! WTF.
6. Based on the Morgan State game, a 50 point loss looks very possible in the Swamp.

I love how you expect people to flock to see a team that is coming off two consecutive 2-win seasons and more than two decades worth of poor football, and then you hold it against the brand new coach. I also don't see how the cinder block entrance was as big of a failure as espn made it out to be. Did they expect the kool-aid guy to just burst through it? Needless to say, hopefully they don't do that anymore.

I agree with your other points. I guess we all didn't see what Creighton saw with Bell, because Roback should clearly be starting. Bell looked lost on any drop back that wasn't a quick pass. Great athlete, and quick as hell, but he shouldn't be playing QB.

And there is no hiding the embarrassment of the three players getting arrested in the week leading up to our first game. Eagle Totem wrote a great article on it. Our athletic department should be ashamed that MLive had to break it nearly 4 days after it happened. That's frustrating as a fan and alumni. I expect better from them in that regard.

I was hoping for at least 15,000+ for the opener. Creighton/Lyke did all the right things regarding marketing and promotion; novelty turf, energetic, likable coach etc, getting the message out there.

Then to lay an egg like that v Morgan St. ENSURES that many first time curious fans will not be returning. Missed opportunity, we needed to CRUSH them with plenty of style points.

Now to redeem ourselves, we have to play courageously vs Florida and MSU because being "competitive" in those games is not being realistic.

I'd like to point out that the 9000 number is paying fans. There were more butts in the seats than that. Also, that number is a thousand more paying fans than attended the home opener last year against Howard (ESPN.com box score). So are you going to applaud the program for getting an increase?

But our Athletic department has done all of this before James Still, not sure about Glenn Bryant situation. We did win the Cartwright award but no one talks about that.

James Still was not during Heather Lyke's tenure.

Uh no. Let's see, we drew 7,668 fans last year with; 1. a lame duck coach who everyone knew was going to be fired 2. No promotion or hype and 3. a team that had absolutely zero hope for having a respectable or even an interesting season. It was a year in limbo.

You honestly are good with essentially matching last season's attendance mark? Expect more. Aim higher. Last season was a perfect storm of crap.

EMU fans never let the past die. Sad.

What's sadder is that regardless of who is in charge in the EMU administration athletic or otherwise they don't seem to learn from their past mistakes regarding communication to the outside world. There are plenty of outsiders who show us the warts of our athletic department but we help enable them by not knowing or enforcing our own rules (Stills), perception Bryant and again perception the three football players-they make Ypsi and EMU look like the wild wild west. It doesn't make recruiting athletes or non athletes to come to EMU any easier. At least CC hasn't engaged in athlete rehabilitation projects like English did.

I know I am very new to the Eagle board but may i add a few thoughts on this debate? let's allow for Creighton and Heather Lyke to respect, protect and shield these three young men legal rights to handle and addressing this in a private matter.

We should treat and handle this the way that we handled the situation about the ex-EMU player that is a cop and accused of raping a fee women, folks here were saying wait and allow for the legal process to work it way out for him.

These are young men and part of the EMU family. Lets not post about it until we have all the facts in a few weeks.. Please.

EMU players charged with attacking relative of man who killed teammate

Not that it makes it right, but you can't blame them.

Quote:The man they assaulted, Demarco Taylor...is the cousin of Kristopher Pratt, who plead guilty to second-degree murder of Reed and was sentenced to 18 to 30 years in prison.

Odd why is that then that the U of M head coach can generically inform the media that a U of M player as been suspended? MSU does the same thing- ie player so and so was suspended for misconduct or breaking team rules (remember Max Bullough pre Rose Bowl). I believe Fleck at WMU has now commented on their latest two suspensions.
