I think the difference is (as well as the 2009 USM game) was the excitement of a close game and catching lightning in a bottle.
Saturday was different. For one thing, the game stopped being interesting in the 3rd quarter, because Troy was done. For another, there was a palpable feeling that we might be seeing a transformation.
We totally dismantled Troy, in every phase of the game, the way good teams do. No lucky bounces. No timely turnovers. Just a straight up ass-whoopin', like good teams do.
Exactly. That is why the Troy fans are so sick......they know it wasn't a fluke!

And, in all honesty, it's been so long since we delivered one of those instead of received one, we really didn't (and still don't) know how to process it. But that's a good problem to have.

I think the answer to Scarbo's question is after the TCU win in 2004.

What impressed me was the intensity level never waned as it has in so many previous games as the second half was played. There was no swoon that in the past permitted USM to come from behind and win. UAB was the better team in all four quarters. Perhaps with this staff and these players, the UAB football program has begun to come into its own and establish itself as a major D1 player in Alabama collegiate football. This game was not the whole journey, but it was a major first step in the right direction.

That was my feeling as well. I remember beating the breaks off them on national tv.

Only time will tell but I am feeling good about this coach. Mcgee was our choice that's why we liked him. At that time we didn't know we weren't his choice. This one week has brought more excitement to the fan base than all of the good mcgee claimed to be doing. It is hard to be excited about UAB football but I think we are finally seeing it's possible. The fan base deserves it.

we need to be realistic here. uab will never be a major player in D1 as long as we are not in a major conference. what we can be is a major player in CUSA. what we can be is one of the best non power teams in the country. what we can be is a team that develops a hard core fan base north of the 30k mark. what we can be is the team in CUSA that is considered as a potential candidate to move up the FBS food chain during the next realignment instead of joke.

If we had an ocs, we already would have moved during realignment. I seriously have zero doubt about that. Tulane got the AAC invite over us, and that is the only thing they had going for them.

I disagree. Tulane has the fact that they are in New Orleans, a destination city going for them. That played a major factor in the decision to move up.
And Birmingham is the number one market for college football ratings for something like 12 of the past 13 years and we were 2nd in the off year.

For example, playing the "Hey hey hey ... Goodbye" song over the PA near the end of the game.

That's what I was thinking. There was a huge feeling of great things coming in 2004. That season ended up mediocre, and it also ended up as a high water mark.
Still, for one week after torching TCU on national TV with Hackney showing out with Roddy, we were riding higher than we are now.

New Orleans being a destination city has nothing to do with Tulane either.

Local people want to support a local team, but they won't support a loser.

Funny then that it was one of the reasons cited for selecting them.
When we get selected, watch what the reasons will be.
New dome, great football market, and a commitment from the university. That's the stuff people say when they are projecting a positive spin on a move.
It comes down to potential, and our potential is pretty high in this market. We just need to win consistently.

Everyone knows that stat has nothing to do with UAB.
No...but I think it can benefit UAB.

I'm glad we missed the AAC train wreck.
