No. Its my understanding that directv doesn't carry the pac 12 network. Or channel 5 as of the time of this post

Which causes me to wonder --- what happened to the proposed a la carte cable TV service idea? You remember, where each channel could be bought separately instead forcing you to purchase a package. Guessing the cable people paid off the politicians.

A la carte has never been on the table. Monopolistic cable and satellite companies do NOT want to offer this as they THINK it will reduce revenues in long run.

More like people came to their senses and realized what it would have done to the price of programing. Without the ability for networks to package all their channels together the options we have would go down and the price would go up.

Thing is, that cable subscribers that don't care about sports channels like ESPN subsidize the ones that do. And it's really the content providers that want to guarantee that so many people get access to their programming so they negotiate deals where say, if a cable provider provides say the Discovery channel, the Science Channel, Dicovery Kids, etc, all have to go with it.

At any rate a true a la carte system would result in most people paying about the same what they do now (since they are already basically willing to pay what they do to get the channels they care about) and just get less channels as a result (they'd lose the channels they don't care about, but which they now get as a bonus, and which they might now watch occasionally).

RE: Direct TV
Maybe special packages like:

Guy package - sports channels, news and that channel where they blow stuff up

Chick package - Reality show channels, HBO/showtime for chick flicks and Oprah and hallmark channels

Trailer park package - Reality show channels, shopping channels and that channel with the redneck shows like that lil fat girl and the moonshine show

See where I'm headed here? Something for special groups.

My second cousin Mark was a supporting cast member on Clash of the Ozarks... that moonshine show. :-P

True ala carte will lead to the most popular networks pulling a Raycom and demanding a 400% increase in fees. Unless you forgot Memphis area DISH customers had to do without channel 5 last year as Raycom pulled the same stunt with DISH. The Cable/Sat companies will still have to buy unwanted channels from the networks as they will still be packaged together from the networks. That cost will be passed on to consumers.
