Passing numbers have been on a steady climb for years now. Just in the last few years, 5000 passing yards has become a quite reachable number for several different QB's. Record numbers in TD's have also been increasing, even moreso in the last decade.
But this year could be the tipping point. With the new more extreme emphasis on contact between the DB's and receivers (this is after several years of legislating DB's out of the game already), we could see multiple QB's complete over 75 or even 80% of their passes and have a 10-12 different QB's pass for over 5000 yards and 35 TD's.
There are some signs of it in the preseason. Even though we all know the preseason stats are meaningless in general, there is a trend of multiple franchise QB's completing near 80% of their passes this year. Its notable because of the discussion of tighter enforcement on contact and the fact that these number trends haven't really been seen in any preseason before.
It all depends on how far the zebra's take this in the first few weeks of the season. If they call it as tight as the preseason, get ready for a record number of records to fall.
Either way, offense was up again last year and I don't see them taking it the other way anytime soon. lol
here is a tidbit from Clayton which discusses some of it in his mailbag segment. Its in the latter part of the clip around the 2:00 minute mark.
