RE: UAB +28.5
It means we sucked last year & have not proven yet that we don't suck this year.

It looks very complicated, but I'm not sure more math is better with football like it is with baseball.

Kind of pointless for him to even put out a rating at this point...there is zero logic in ranking a 0-1 team ahead of the team that beat them. I'm sure his rankings make more sense at the end of the season with a full set of data, but at this stage, I think it actually costs him credibility because it fails the "idiot" test; any idiot can see that we we just ran Troy into the ground, yet according to Sagarin, we're not as good as they are.
Eff that. Troy got whupped.

I want to win it as much as I want to win any game, but even if we get righteously shellacked, it really doesn't have much bearing on the trajectory of our season, unless we let it.
That is, unless we win.
That's the point, isn't it?
UAB Football should set their sights on CUSA titles and bowl wins, and eventually, a move to a BCS Conference, so we wouldn't see UAB play "money games".

In Mississippi State's defense, aren't they the only SEC team that's ever played UAB at Legion?
Correct me if I'm mistaken.

RE: UAB +28.5
The fallacy in it is that it appears to use previous year's info at least at the beginning of the year.
We were way down the list at the end of last year.
As we play a few more games this year, it will be a better indicator as to how high we may have jumped with the new staff.
Realistically, we can probably rule out anything lower than 60 regardless of our performance.
Factors like strength of schedule, etc. being part of the reason.
I still like to look at the ranking periodically just for kicks (whenever we don't totally blow chunks)

His rankings take prior year results into account, especially early in the season. You would get really weird numbers if you had no starting data and just entered whatever happened in week 1.(for instance, how good is mtsu, and how bad is la tech based off of what happened last week?)
Also, I care much more about what we do on the field than what some computer says.

I think UAB will beat the spread. I do not think UAB will win the game, but I think we will look impressive in the loss.

UAB has more than just a new coaching staff. This staff significantly remolded the team by bringing in many new players, particularly JUCOs, expected to have immediate impact this season at many positions - including QB. They intend to win NOW, not just to build for later. We are also seeing long overdue improved facilities to support the program move from "planned" toward "in place".
