RE: Week 1 Power Rating
Surely you know there's a difference between SWAC/MEAC schools and upper-tier FCS schools... right?
GS will be Savannah State by 70+ this week, and UAPB and Southern are on the same level.

Savannah St should be a cake walk but I get the feeling that Fritz will not push up the score like Monken did. I say 45+

And that's fine, I think in blowouts, margin is of no importance. The cajuns won by 40, but if they had won by 60 or 30, it makes no difference, the point is proven that they dominated a vastly weaker opponent. A gauge for most of our teams who had FCS opponents will be next week as we find out where we all really are, but for ranking purposes, it's all we have to go by...well that and preseason prognostications.

If we're going on making an impression, I was far more impressed with Georgia Southern's outing than I was ULM. ULM was basically a favorite, GS was an 18 point underdog.
Texas State and ULL cant be judged...not off their outings. Cant make a real judgment on AState either. Might learn more from Montana State than we would from a UAPB, but they don't compare to the top level SBC teams we would face in a given year.

RE: Week 1 Power Rating
My turn, I was disappointed in Troy. Georgia Southern had nothing to be ashamed of. To be honest, I did not think App State was going to beat Michigan yesterday initially but I really did not think Hoke could get it done which caused me to change my vote. After week 1, I have it as follows:
1) Louisiana Lafayette - Cajuns win against class of the SWAC last year (if that's saying something)
2) Arkansas State - Red Wolves win against good team from Big Sky.
3) Louisana Monroe - Great job against ACC team.
4) South Alabama - No game last week.
5) Texas State - Crushed UAPB.
6) Georgia Southern - Would be higher had they beat NC State.
7) Troy - McKayla Maroney called, she's not impressed.
8) Appalachian State - "Block Heard Around the World" avenged by Michigan.
9) Idaho - Got lucky on account of the weather.
10) New Mexico State - won against decent Big Sky team.
11) Georgia State - finally wins their first game as a FBS team.
Predictions to follow later.

Southern was 9-4 last season, while UAPB was like 2-9... I'd give the nod to Southern on that one.

9-4 in the SWAC is pretty much 2-9 in any other conference. There's a reason they don't participate in the playoffs.

Last game of the 2013 season:
Really hoping all the prognosticating of a GS melt down at the end of the year never happens. With 30 on the DL and "no" experimenting it could be argued that GS improved. Hoping that happens again.

Oldyeller I understand your point, I really do but that game was last season. We need to see how this season plays out before we can really know. It did look like we ran out of gas on defense in the last 10 minutes of the NC St game. I don't think that happens a couple of years from now but for this year that lack of depth with keep some of our opponents in the game whether we like it or not.

I actually think StAte's showing was the most impressive. Not sold that NC State is a bowl team like some pundits think. I am fairly confident they will be better than Wake, though.
Montana State probably isn't going to be an overly good FCS team but they would probably manhandle Southern and UAPB. The SWAC is an awful league.

Sure, but holding Montana up as North Dakota State is a reach. The SLC has more games on FXSP in Louisiana than the SBC. I've watched Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin a number of times and both program have destroyed Montana in recent meetings. Montana couldn't beat SE Louisiana right now. They could not compete with the top of the SLC this year.

Some people are picking based on the results YTD while others are looking at who will win down the line, yet some are doing a little of both to rank their program higher than the method they are using. Got to love it.

And some of us are just going "eh, it's all for fun".

(08-31-2014 01:32 PM)Arrowhead Wrote: We did this last year. After the first week of games, it is very hard to do this and a crap shoot, but with all the info we have I'll go:
1) ULL - decent performance, but can't tell from Southern a lot.
2) ULM- Offense didn't start clicking till end of game, but Defensive was dominating. Win over ACC gets a move up this week.
3) ASU - nice win over GOOD FCS.
4) Georgia Southern - almost knocked off ACC team. Depth not good.
5) USA - can't tell yet with no game, but get this after last year.
6) Texas St.- dominated bad FCS.
7) NMSU - nice win over FCS
8) Idaho - cancelled game
9) Troy - awful start
10) Georgia St. - got to not out them last since they won.
11) App St. - Nor the worst, but hard to tell much after this week. Will probably move up fast. No offense app, we do this weekly and you can move way up in a week.
1: TxSt totally dominated that team.
2: Louisiana two poor interceptions nullified an otherwise outstanding performance.
3: NMSU really impressed.
4: Idaho, you gotta respect their prayers to Thor.
6: stAte
7: ULM beating a bad, bad Wake
8: Georgia Southern one uncaused fumble away from the upset of the week.
9: Georgia State, very hard to earn that first win.
10: App State getting hammered by Michigan in a revenge game at the Big House is not that awful.
11: Troy getting hammered by UAB has to hurt regardless of first year coaching changes.

I hope Fritz take this opportunity to give the reserves their much-needed playing time/experience so they can feel more comfortable/confident to spell the starters in the tougher games.
