"this wasn't like last season when the Hogs seemed to be in it for a half and then had little left for the second half."

Did he watch yesterday's game? 21-21 in the first half; 0-24 in the second half. Not like last year?

Wally definitely had the rose colored glasses in this morning's column. However I do agree that overall the team did look better than last year.

RE: Another classic quote by Wally
We have to remember that Auburn is an outstanding football team. I don't like the idea of playing a conference game the first game of the season. Growing up in the old Southwest Conference, there were always three non conference games prior to beginning the season. One reason was probably that there weren't as many teams in the conference, so you could play non conference games and still be able to play every conference opponent every season. There is no doubt in my mind that from a competition and geographical standpoint, Arkansas is a natural Big 12 team. But Frank Broyles had the foresight to see the economic benefit to being in he SEC. I can't see Arkansas's football program ever being equal to Alabama, LSU and several others. Not to say they can't win a championship, but on a year to year basis, those other school just have too much going for them in their natural recruiting areas and traditions. The most Arkansas fans should reasonably expect are normally 8 win seasons with an occasional 10 win season, and maybe an undefeated season once every two decades. But we know most are not realistic, so forget I ever mentioned it.

They may well be better, but they played Auburn much better last year. Last year they had more first downs (25-18), about the same total yardage (346 to 366), and the final score was closer. The only reason Auburn won going away last year was because the hogs had 3 crucial turnovers, and Auburn had none. Yesterday they did look good in the first half, but it looked like a college vs. a high school team in the second half. Not sure what the difference was other than the starting quarterback for Auburn playing and halftime adjustments.

RE: Another classic quote by Wally
The defensive line got absolutely no pressure on the Quarterback and when Nick Marshall came in, they started running through the Razorback defense like they weren't there on a lot of occasions. Maybe lack of quality depth set in, and fatigue. It was very hot and humid. Most disappointing to me was once again the lack of production by the Arkansas receivers and defensive backs.

Keon Hatcher dropped as sure a touchdown catch as you'll ever see which killed a drive at a time when the game was still in doubt, and I can't believe that Auburn could have receivers so wide open in the middle of the field time and again while Arkansas couldn't ever get a man open downfield. And Brandon Allen was running for his life on many passing attempts.
The Hogs were unable to form a pocket where he could step up and throw the ball. He actually played well, but as usual our defense couldn't shut down a good offense. Until the defense improves, they'll have a tough time winning against quality competition. On the plus side, I see signs of improvement as new and younger players gain more experience and strength. I believe with some improvement a some luck, they could still win six games this year. Four or five is more realistic, but they're going to beat someone in the conference this year. Now having said that, I know Scotto is probably going to post "Who?".

Most Razorback fans would be thrilled with mediocrity right now I imagine. Those days under Nutt when they beat 4 terrible teams OOC and then won two SEC games and played in the Independence Bowl have to look exciting compared to the 3 win version that they are being delivered now.

This year they play 3 terrible OOC games and a Texas Tech team that struggled to beat UCA. Realistic fans would be elated with those wins and 2 conference wins to get to the Weedeater Bowl. Not sure who those conference wins would be, but it's not out of the question. It's just the crazy fans on Drivetime and the message boards who had them coming out and beating Auburn in their first game.

They'll start rolling this coming week, as they have their Philander Smith(who the Trojans love to get on their schedule in basketball) Nichols State, so maybe they can get their six wins and make it to the first meeting with Arkansas State at the Go Daddy Bowl.

I said long ago that Wally small was a prick and didn't know near as much about sports as he thought he did. A homer if there ever was a homer. I just call'em like I see them. Same way with the Trojans. I call'em like I see them. No homer in me.
