the turf was pretty cool, but kind of disorienting. it looked like those photos you see at the sports collectibles shop at the mall that are a pic of Barry Sanders and it's black and white except for his Honolulu Blue jersey.

whoever was operating the scoreboard was either drunk or new. the down and yards to go were constantly wrong the entire game. what's up with that?

i talked to some parents of players and they said we will have new lights next year. hopefully they know something and it is more than wishful thinking.

RE: grey turf, scoreboard and lights
I'm flying home now. I was a guest of a friend in the suites last night. Had a good chance to talk with our AD.

I did tell Heather that I love the turf. It really breaks up the green (turf) and red (track) look.

Yes we talked turf, lights, and scoreboard including $. Heather did indicate ball park numbers on them.

More details later when I get home.

Wonder what happened to charging for parking? There was no one at the gate across the street from 2pm-game time.

Maybe with move in being today, and many parents coming, they decided to hold off?

Yeah those refs were getting so irritated with the person running the scoreboard. Any official number on people that went to the game?

RE: Turf

I told Heather I loved the color, actually like the very popular dark metallic gray cars which have been popular for years. Hether indicated she worked very, very closely with the Field Turf rep. Did not like the look when the black pellets were put in. Field Turf folks had to come up with gray pellets so the field would not have looked black.

Lot of 'attention to details.' Kudos for getting this right!

The turf looked excellent at 5:00 p.m., excellent when the lights came on, and still excellent when the heavy rains came.

It passed the test!!

Yes the timeclock and down markers and scoreboard were amateur and detracted from the game experience.

BTW, the fans around me did not think gray pants work with gray turf.

Should be black? Or Morgan State could have worn their non-white pants and we could have gone white (borrrrrrrrrring).

The gray pants are ok but I prefer white or green. Keep black out of the color options. Always wear green shirts at home.

RE: grey turf, scoreboard and lights
BTW, Heather and I were chatting about new lights and scoreboard.

The gist was lights could be 1.5M (or higher if the standards need to be replaced).

I suggested 2.5M for a new scoreboard and Heather replied "or even more."

I see these two items totaling between 4 - 5M.

I get the impression that she wants to do things right.

BTW, we spent big, big bucks on the Convo scoreboard. That thing wasn't cheap.

I'm trying to ascertain when EMU will starting a building campaign for these items, maybe a new press box, and maybe more for the football building. Folks like to donate to build buildings (or things like scoreboard, lights, etc. for sports).

I was told (by someone else) that the EMU Foundation doesn't have a director so a big, big fund raising campaign isn't likely to begin anytime soon.

How about a press box on the visitors side for media personnel and so the home side shows so it doesn't look like bare concrete everywhere?

You might wish to raise that issue on the main MAC board.

Folks there know about these things but there could be issues related to television, cables, etc.

I've never looked behind the visitors side but could we run a small patch of road to the back to make it possible? May cost us initially but it showing actual butts in seats may help being more tv friendly.

Problem being is that EMU Stadium runs North/ South. No TV crew would shoot a game back into the sun. It would look like nuclear winter behind the west stands, which would look like crap on TV.

It would be a lot easier to make the east side of the stadium the home side. Move the EMU team to the east side.

Dear utpotts,
Most football stadiums are oriented North and South so the players aren't blinded by the setting sun in the West. If you play most of your games at night it will not be a problem.
