i still agree that mcgee was WAY underachieving.
at the same time, i expect some rough spots to come with what is still a new system…
but I'm ecstatic about todays game

How clear is it that McGee totally sucked and was an azzhole con-man from the very start? Nuthin' more than Petrino's cover man.

It was soooo much fun today. So proud of the team and Coach Clark.

RE: Coaching
Simple things
Things I would have done a long time ago if I were the coach.
Things I have not seen us do in years.

On offense, sending the WR in motion almost every other play. It causes the defense to hesitate and think before every play. Our offense is going to give most teams a head ache each week with all the little wrinkles.

On defense, walking the LBs up to the line showing blitz, then walking back. Or walking them up then actually bringing them on a blitz. It causes the offense to hesitate and think before every play. I'm sure these coaches have taught these players how to do it on their own just to play mind games with the offense.

Things so simple even a Madden 2015 coach can do it.

RE: Coaching
my only complaint was watching Howard run the wildcat several plays in a row down on the goal line. i did not like the way it was looking (until he pounded it into the end zone, of course)

Yes. That felt shaky at the time. Made me nervous.

My first thought was "here we go again." I'm just used to that as a Blazer fan. Glad Coach Clark and the team proved me wrong. I was VERY impressed today. Looking forward to this season.

Don't forget we added about 14 JUCOs one started at qb. It was not the same team

I'm thinking the coaches have a few more plays planned out of that formation that they did not want to show today. Saving them for a better moment. They kept it simple because they know Troy did not prepare for it. And I'm assuming these coaches are smart. If this was the last guy, I would assume he was not this smart. 05-stirthepot

McGee could have added 25 JUCOs and not gotten the same result as Clark did today.

Yeah, but how many JUCOs started and made an impact. Starting OL was made up of returning players. RBs were returning players. WRs were returning players. QB managed the game. Joe webb, Austin Brown, and JP could have done that. DL was made up of returning players. LBs were returning players. Same for the secondary. One or two new guys is normal for any team.

We started 6 new guys on defense alone. Just sayin. I agree we were better coached. That goes without saying. Our strength and conditioning has also improved leaps and bounds.

Zac Woodfin may be our MVP outside of Clark.

Fortunately, the other shady coaching call took place on the other sideline. I thought we were struggling a bit more when Pruitt was at QB for Troy. I was glad when he went back to the bench

Yeah, but at one point, Pruitt got popped and lost all interest in holding on the ball for long.

(08-30-2014 07:49 PM)BlazerMatt Wrote:  If you want to pick one play that epitomized our defense today from defenses of the past 10 years it's this one:
In the third quarter we had them in a 3rd and long and showed three deep zone, with soft coverage underneath, otherwise known as the same sort of prevent D that has caused up to give up so many 10+ yard 3rd down conversions year after year. The troy receivers were actually pointing it out to the QB pre-snap and you could visibly see their QB relax, it was almost like a cartoon thought bubble appeared above his head that said "Yeah, we can pick this **** apart easy." He got the snap and 5 receivers streaked into deep routs, only for their QB to, again, visibly from the stands, tighten up as the 2 blitzers he never saw coming streaked into the backfield. He sidestepped one guy and then threw it under heavy pressure, the ball falling incomplete out of bounds a good 15 yards from his nearest receiver.

The disguised blitzes and general pressure on the QB were a thing of beauty. Great to see us get that pressure with a 3-man front. Diaheem was a beast.

Also, every Blazer defense from the last 10 years would have given up an easy TD on Troy's last drive before halftime. It's remarkable that we gave Troy 3 points and two turnovers to flip the momentum, but they couldn't take advantage.

RE: Coaching
I think what we saw today was a coach that has placed 7 months of preparation into his defense. Our last 3 coaches didn't have a a clue about how to run a defense.

We were also crazy good on 3rd down conversions.
I'm just so impressed at how prepared the entire team was, and how that translated into overall good performance in all phases of the game.
Folks, what we have here is an honest to goodness football coach!!!

One thing I did see that Will hurt us: a running Qb that can throw. Will be interesting to see how coaches prep for the defense for that.

Mississippi State has two of those.

RE: Coaching
It was just 1 game but it was a good one, I saw blitzes that actually worked & a team that didn't quit when things went bad. In years past we would have seen a team give in after that first Troy drive or after the 2 turnovers coming out of half. Instead they slapped Lucy & forced her to put that ball back down so we could kick it.

Mcgee was not head coaching material this guy is. Him leaving was the best thing that has ever happened to this program. With a win against A&M Clark matches his year 2 win total. That speaks volumes about what a failure he was. Coach Clark and company were leaps and bounds better in every facet of the game in their first Game.
