New Convo Location?
Any indication as to whether they're purchasing the surrounding businesses and knocking them down? I'd prefer to not have the eyesore of a car dealership and a bowling alley right next to the arena.

Very disappointed if this is how it's going down. It's over 2 miles from the closest point of campus.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I asked about the property near University Park. I had read the start of this thread and saw the S. Main location and first thought was WTF. It's very disappointing from many aspects, I would think if anyway possible you'd want your sports facilities on campus or as close as you can. It's easy for the students as well as from an alumni standpoint, bringing them back to campus seeing what's going on and keeping them engaged. As far as the traffic issues, I can't imagine that being any better/worse between S. Main and Port.

RE: New Convo Location?
I would have mixed feelings about South Main. In the middle of campus has great benefits, no doubt.

I imagine an incredible, modern coliseum right next to 81 with a great video board branding JMU athletics to 10s of thousands from all over the east coast 24/7/365...that's a lot of branding value.

At the same time, it would be a bit sad...

Is JMU worried about academic expansion space on campus?

RE: New Convo Location?
There was a time when the location of the current convo was considered "off campus". Although, if it's really 2 miles away, that's not good.

I don't care if it's adjacent to the current facility. It's kind of a pain for the students but the university gives them a lot of options to be able to make it such as off campus buses and stuff so that's not a big deal.

ROFL. Someone thinks any traffic in Harrisonburg could ever count as gridlock. Muuahahahahaha

RE: New Convo Location?
From a parking perspective, this seems like a logical choice. I would assume that the parking would be 2x (minimum) of what is available around the convo. A lot of students are coming from off-campus anyway. If there are places to park, it shouldn't be that big of an issue if they really want to go to a game. Students living on campus will be at a disadvantage, but I'm sure they'll have buses like they do for everything else. Not the end of the world. Maybe JMU will expand down to the convo over time!

Why stray from the Master Plan? What is the point of having a plan if you are going to deviate this drastically? I can understand building design, landscape, etc., or even if the ground was not fit for the structure.

Don't bother with talking about traffic. If one is so concerned with leaving, then park where you can escape. The only thing that should be done with the area being discussed down on S. Main is to build student apartments with great aesthetics from I-81.

Check out what UNC-Charlotte is building. Student Housing
Be sure to look at the Gallery.

UNC-C is not building that, it is an off campus housing complex just like all up an down port road. Have you seen Aspen Heights? http://www.myaspenheights.com/our-locati...risonburg/

I should have said what is being built for UNC-Charlotte students. Sorry! Though, it appears you missed my point in your haste to find fault.

Again, something like this is what needs to be done on that location. If JMU owns the land, lease it to someone who can provide something like it. I cannot think of anything useful that should be part of JMU's campus, located there. In no way does our MBB or WBB teams need to be playing that far from campus.

The master plan was released in 2009 and since it is 5 years old and was made under a former president, it is fairly irrelevant at this point.
It is long due for an update. That would require open communication though...

Seriously, is it that far from campus.....it is 2-3 miles from campus. I bet half the students live off-campus anyway, most that far from campus anyway. I am sure JMU would run bus service to get on-campus students there. It is a non-issue for paying adults and it is a much better location for ingress/egress. It is not like they are proposing a new Convo in Elkton or Bridgewater. All in all it is a non-issue where you build if you can put a consistent winner on the court. If you win, fans will come.

I thought the Master Plan was designed to cover a 30 year window. Whether it was or not, why have it on http://www.jmu.edu if its not relevant. A couple of keystrokes and they can remove it. I guess it gives the impression that a lot of thought goes into the decisions at JMU.

Agree on it not being as big an issue for non-student housing as people think. Although if it is going to be off campus I would have much preferred a location like where the Roses store is located (downtown) for the potential for nearby bar/restaurant scene that could be part of the pre/post-game/concert event.

RE: New Convo Location?
I find this interesting.

There is a 90% finished project that I stumbled onto this evening. I don't know if it's a JMU or Harrisonburg project.

We can now walk from Showker in a nearly straight line all the way to Stone Spring Road/The Wellness Center on what I'd call a high end build "bike path." It's about 10 feet wide, flat and damn straight all things considered. It took me about 10-12 minutes to walk from the corner of Stone Spring/Beery to Showker as the crows fly. The Wellness seems far away from campus but its not that far...

There is a lot of undeveloped land between the path and 81. I don't now if this is the land JMU may have or not already bought bought there is a lot of land back there I've never seen...

I forgot to say the path is asphalt, it would take an easy 5-6 minutes on a bike.

I have found out tonight that this path is called the blue stone trail. It's a shared use project between jmu & harrisonburg.

The Bluestone Trail goes through campus (part of the lake renovations), across port road, through the Jimmy Johns parking lot, and back through the neighborhood to Purcell Park, through Pheasant Run, to Stone Spring & the wellness center.
http://www.harrisonburgva.gov/bluestone-trail

The property in question is addressed currently as 2868 South Main Street, and JMU purchased it officially in June- 60 acres for $4.3 Million. It's ~1.75 miles on the trail from the lake to this property.

I may have missed it, but I don't think I've seen this video of a new convo linked before. This is from 4 months ago, so I'm guessing this is the latest design being floated around. The design is incredible, although I'd love to see this on campus rather than down the road.
