RE: Tiger FB vs. the SEC
We fired the coach to had our best record against SEC teams because our fans, "voting with their feet" decided he was "boring", despite 3 consecutive 6-win seasons playing SEC-laden schedules. A sound running game with tough defense wasn't good enough. Same half-assed fans who stay at home when a little rain is predicted.

I heard it was some hanky panky in the office that lead to Stobarts demise.

If average attendance was 40,000 (as it should have been) instead of 12,000 I doubt that his personal indiscretions would have mattered that much.

Maybe our fans had the scruples to not want to go watch a boring team coached by a known womanizer ?

Sure they did. Good, winning football isn't boring to me. I don't have to see a pass 75% of the time or lots of touchdowns to enjoy it.

I don't really like the tone of Fuente's quote. To me it says, "We're not able to compete with them and we know it."

God bless you. You should be a cubs fan too. You'd think after 40 years of boring football we woulda "lucked" up ONCE and hired a Sumlin or Leach type.

Sigh

With Ole Miss back on the schedule, the SEC is again on the Memphis radar after a two-year hiatus. Dating back to 1997 (the year after the Tigers' upset of Tennessee at the Liberty Bowl), the Tigers are 2-25 against the country's most powerful conference. Whether or not the SEC stays on the schedule remains to be seen. "I'm okay with playing one stretch game," says Fuente. "That's what you'll see from us in the future. My concern is the league; where are we in the league? Can we build our facilities and compete in this league? I have no inferiority complex with the Southeastern Conference. Our job is to be Sprite, not Coke and not Pepsi. To build a program that's competitive in our realm." — FM

Why did they conveniently pick 1997 as the milestone? In the early 90s we beat Ole Miss, Florida, Miss State, and Arkansas, some of those multiple victories. I know that doesn't even come close to evening up the W-L, but tell it like it is.

Bc it's the Flyer. The same Flyer that said there was really only 20,000 at the Ut Martin home opener 2 years ago

I miss Dennis Freeland.

Maybe he picked post UT win in 1996 because everyone was hoping that would be some sort of watershed moment.

I'm pretty certain that Frank Murtaugh isn't out to get us.

PS
I miss Freeland too.

The point to me was that we haven't beat an SEC team in 10 years and that the odds are we may not ever beat another one any time soon. Then we got someone who wants to bring up the 80s when we beat Bammer and Florida or the 70s when we beat Auburn twice. Let's just blame RC for everything like we always do.

He had the Ground Chuck reputation but Matthews set school records for passing. Can't have it both ways.

This is what boils down the Chuck Stobart era to me. Last game of the season, we have East Carolina at home, we win and probably get the Liberty Bowl invitation. Team shows up flat, crowd is flat and the game turns out to be a disaster. No fire in the belly of coaches, players and the fans as well.

True we beat some SEC teams, but that wasn't the SEC that it is now. Tommy's teams beat some much better Ole Miss teams.

Hell we can't ever beat ECU. Same thing happened to Rip after we beat UT

I think you forgot Alabama and Florida also, or was that the late 80's?

That ECU game was painful to sit through - was Blake ECU's QB that game, cannot remember.

It was also after a close loss to UT in Knoxville from what I remember; maybe that is why they were flat.
