RE: NO transparency at all
I'm trying to relate this to our expectations of Alger and Company. I completely agree that we should not be entitled to everything that is being done regarding conference affiliation (and they now have clearly stated that if an acceptable conference comes calling we are ready to move). Where should the line be drawn as to what is said and what is not stated.

For me, you don't ask me for money without telling me the goal you are trying to reach and how its to be used. Then, you make available how you spent it.

For me, saying, "I do not feel its in our best interest to talk about that at this time," is better than saying, "we are monitoring the situation." One implies that something is being done, the other implies nothing is being done."

Until NC State came out and said we have a deal with JMU in 2018, I was becoming really concerned about our OOC scheduling as I watch RU and W&M announce deal after deal. Then, I find out something is being done, but not through a JMU source, but from NC State. I'm in hopes that we appear to be dragging our feet in this OOC scheduling due to a real expectation by JB that a move is coming soon. Why hold back in telling us what has been done?

I do applaud EW, as he seems to know what "juices" the alumni, and where to draw the line, versus Alger and JB. I do know that they each have very different roles, but one appears very active and energetic about making things happen, the other two seem like they enjoy a paycheck and the notoriety than is received by the title bestowed upon them.

I have a limited group that I train and I groom on how to communicate with my clients and in what format. I don't let first and second year attorneys communicate with anyone until I've trained them.

The best quote from the article is this one: "It's not necessarily controlling the message, it's making sure the message is what we all want it to be," Withers said."

I'm glad Coach has clamped down on the free access to the players by the media. I'm glad he has a 12 person leadership council that is charged with self governance within the culture that has been developed. You also don't see off message or inappropriate tweets like we've seen in the past.

That certainly sounds good in a lawyer case. Makes perfect sense. Also, good to see the opposite side with a valid case, without using words like butthurt. Touche. Valid argument.

This is not just for a law firm. The players are being subjected to the same rules and practices that any good organization uses. We want to protect our brand and having just anyone mouth off to the press can be detrimental to the program. We also don't want to provide too much information to our opponents. If someone complains about not starting or mentions that someone is hurt or talks about how poorly a unit is playing, it all can impact what happens on the field.

These guys are happier than I have seen them be in a long time. People crave structure (even when they complain about it) because the rules are clear and so are the rewards and consequences. If the USC player that lied about how he was injured was playing under Coach Withers, his butt would be gone. Not suspended. Gone.

Hot Hammer ... I was with you all the way until the example of the USC player. Not sure that Coach Withers would have suspended him for that. Kids make mistakes in judgment all the time. I haven't seen anything to make me believe that Coach Withers would jump to a suspension because a player told a lie and then admitted it and apologized for it. But perhaps, I don't know the whole story down there in Cockland.

USC as in Southern Cal... Not SCAR

There is only one USC, just like there is only one Carolina, and neither are in the Palmetto State.

No problems with this. I feel like 12 guys can give pretty good perspective on what's going on with the team and I'm sure a reporter could approach Withers if he/she had a specific request to do a feature on a player not in the 12 and get Withers permission.

Mickey also had restrictions on who could speak to the press. This isn't anything new, perhaps Jones just wasn't there for it. As for practices, yeah I think they were a little more open to the Harrisonburg media which, you know, is right there with New York and Philly.

Actually, this is fairly mainstream with good programs.

I am glad for the policy and the players seem to be good with it too. I like the business attitude and the focus of this staff....now just go win baby!

This IS normal. Maybe not in Div II, but certainly big boy football. Keep in mind there were many times under Mickey where he did not make the players available for comment.
I can say up until this point I have ZERO complaints about Withers. He has done some really good things, and even the players are buying in to what he's selling. He understands his role as not only a head coach of HIS program, but as an ambassador to the university. I've seen many shots of him and his staff being interactive in the community. If you want to call that being a celebrity... fine. I would much rather him be a "celebrity" than a silent partner, just blindly hoping the fan base and community would support the team. If anything he's been more blue collar, working his tail off trying to get excitement back into JMU football.
And for me, he's certainly done that. Whether that hard work actually carries over to the field, nobody knows. But he's certainly setting himself and this team up for success.

These guys are the same as I have seen them in the past years . You are imbelishing a little too much about Withers as a coach . The players are in a tight situation because they are playing for a coach that didn't recruit them. Only player that was safe on our team was probably Dean lol . And withers worked under Butch Davis and urban Meyer , they are not going to kick players off the team for a lie, esp not captains or high caliber players and it's their first incident.

JMU rarely has had an issue with players talking to the media or it's culture. MM was fired because he didn't win enough games , that's it. People tend to not care how the program is ran as long as your winning games and have rare instances of criminal and moral negligence. Lol and I'm a FSU fan.

Uhhhh, who's ever played Div II football? I went to a Div III school first and played some doggone good Rugby, beat Penn St. asamatterafact. But never saw a Div-II school.
D-II is some weird subcategory betwixt D-I and D- III, the small, private colleges. I get that. But 1-AA or FCS and Div- II are not the same thing. Not even close.

Bloomsburg was div II.

But thanks for totally missing the point.

NO transparency at all
My favorite part about the original article that brought up this thread was how withers kicked out the whsv guy for filming a part of practice that was not allowed. I really like that he commands respect and has rules even for non players and coaches.

Hot Rod:

MM was fired for more than wins and losses. The truth is he was kept because of his wins not fired for his losses. As a former player, I am shocked you are not more aware of MM own off the field behavior and the lack of control he had over his players. I admire your loyalty to your former coach but you have to be blind to not have seen and heard some of the things MM did that led to him being fired.

All:

I have truly enjoyed this past off season under Withers control. No off the field incidents such as fights, stolen property, drug purchases or players on academic probation. The culture I am seeing is one that would lead any company or ogranization to be successful. While some liberals may scream for access and free speech for all, I say Withers as CEO has every right to control the branding and message of his program. Getting everyone on the same page is the hardest thing to do with any organization and in one semester, Withers has turned the football program around 180 degrees. I have to think all he has done is going to equate to more wins. Let's keep in mind he did not have the spring semester to change the culture at UNC. I am pretty sure he was not named interim head coach until very close to the fall semester but perhaps I am wrong. This is his first true head coaching job and to date, I have been very impressed with how he is handling himself and his program.

This is pretty standard with most programs. Actually Withers and his staff have been rather open with communication all Spring and Summer with the media. He prefers to restrict player access to, guys he feels he can trust to be well spoken with the media -- common practice across all of college football.

He has put in roughly 7 months of work , and you can't compare that to 15 years. Believe me I'm not blind at all but if MM makes a playoff run last year I doubt they would have fired him. Winnings covers up a lot and I know that. There wasn't a lack of control , and whatever other off field issues occurred the admin would have dealt with it if it serious. I look at JMU's program and we have the same issues as FBS colleges and NFL teams. These players had to be on their game this last 8 months because Withers has no personal ties with them. He is working on that though. Withers can be doing great things but if he only wins 6 games a yr the next five years he will be fired. Withers is going to encounter the same issue as all coaches encounter and he will react the same in some situations. I have no issue with him restricting access to the players , they don't need to accessible. We have games to win let the players focus on that instead of answering set up questions by reporters.
