Actually, the "Budapest Memorandum" has no guarantees of intervention. It gives the signers of the treaty justification if they take action but doesn't force anyone to take action.

The treaty signers were Britain, the US, Russia and Ukraine.

Why? These are sovereign nations, clearly mostly incapable of defending themselves, and we have seriously aggresive worldwide geo-political opponents moving on them. Why do we care? Do we care about our treaties and agreements with Ukraine? Poland? Turkey, Jordan, Israel or any number of other Allies, both NATO and others out there?

Or do we only care to look inward? Eff, them. None of our forebears came from these areas, let these people be slaughtered, en masse? Because we have no taste any longer for protecting those that can't protect themselves? That's who we are?

We have made committments, like it or not, to not only these governments, but to these people, innocent people. The civilians like you and I that simply wake up each day and do what we do. Would we want a Soviet tank rumbling down our street? Knocks on doors? ISIS kidnapping our wives and children in the dead of night, or perhaps worse- in broad daylight as YOU watch on helplessly?

Classic lawyers way out of an agreement.

The very heart of the treaty was based on us not allowing Russia to invade their boarders if they gave up their nukes.

They gave up their nukes and we all signed the treaty.

Now 20 years later, Russia invades Ukraine and now our best response is to say "well, in our opinion that's not really what we agreed to if you read the fine print, sorry you are on your own".

Its just so fuggin disgusting.......
