Sometimes you have to rip off the bandaid. If anyone at FSU has a regret about shoving Bowden out the door, it's that they didn't do it earlier.

Denny Crum. I feel for VT cause we went through this. Take care of him $ wise and respect him for all that he has done. Coach in waiting is a mixed bag. I think your AD is top notch. Trust him.

Beamer hasn't warranted any reason to be let go yet. Without a doubt these will be Beamer's last five seasons.

2016 is probably his last year but you can't recruit with less than a four year contract.

I would think a lot has to do with the health of his wife considering her accident several years ago. I can't recall how well her recover went, but Beamer himself looks fine jogging around campus.

How old is Beamer?

Not sure.

Two thoughts...one would be going out and making a flashy hire like Buzz Williams was in basketball.

The second would be take the Clemson approach and promote from within and throw the money saved at the best assistants. In which case I'm guessing it'd be Bud Foster.

Bud Foster seems to be a solid coach on the Xs and Os. How does he recruit and manage people?

Beamer turns 68 this season. I feel sorry VT fans as this is a tough position to be in. Yes he built the program, but it will continue to crumble every year he stays. If he truly cared about the program, he'd accept that he's not that same coach he was 10 or 15 years ago. This is FSU 2.0, which is unfortunate timing considering the ACC main priority of improving its overall football brand.

Agree look at Denny Crum as he aged in last years. 07-coffee3

I disagree with both those statements and hope he stays around for another decade.

Here is Virginia Techs record since joining the ACC.

2004 10-3
2005 11-2
2006 10-3
2007 11-3
2008 10-4
2009 10-3
2010 11-3
2011 11-3
2012 7-6
2013 8-5

How can you get rid of a coach with that kind record? and why would you want too. Two down years and it's "see ya, old fart".

We would have to get extremely lucky to have our next coach put up that kind of record in a 9 year span.

I have to wonder if there is a tacit agreement that he will retire before the end of this deal? Nobody wants to force him out, but nobody wants another Bobby Bowden / Joe Paterno debacle either.

This. But I don't think it matters much. Kids, parents and coaches should be smart enough to realize he's in his twilight years anyways. I don't think he coaches through the end of this extension either. Don't think he's able to rebound the program well enough to grant him that opportunity.

What has VT's recruiting been like? Fact is, he's old and the program isn't where it used to be. Odds are good that it's not going to return to where it was just 5 years ago as long as he's the coach. I think he has a few more years of good will he can exhaust before he's forced out. I don't expect him to coach through 2019 or whenever.

For some reason I thought VT was better than a 3-loss team every year back in the aughts. Guess not. Still a nice run.

RE: Frank Beamer to get contract extension
Honestly I don't know how I feel about this. I feel like we need a new leader to get us where we need to be. I don't see us in the hunt for a NC under Beamer.

Did he earn our respect? Yes.
Is he still putting together winning seasons? Yes.
Has he been positioning VT for a national championship run? I don't think so.
